Make entire play queue editable

There's currently two queues in Spotify:

• The editable queue. ("Queued tracks")

• The locked queue. ("Next tracks")

If you press the  queue button with tracks in both lists, you can see that these two queues follow each other. The editable queue always plays first.

The problem is having a locked queue at all.

You can't empty it without interrupting playback, and you'll have to use a workaround to do so. You can't reorder it or add or delete songs. After finishing the editable queue, Spotify always continues playback from the locked queue.

The workaround is starting playback at the very last item on a page. The locked queue will then have no further items. Then you can continue by purely using the queue right-click function instead of double-click or enter. This adds items to the editable queue. These tracks can then be reordered and deleted as you wish.

This UI behaviour is, however, not very user-friendly and quite frankly really annoying. It's also very unconventional having two queues in a music player. I've never seen any other software using either a dual-queue system or a locked queue system.

Google Play Music's queue system is really easy to understand and use. Just do what they do.

I can describe it by three (3) easy bullets:

• Double clicking a song starts playing it and adds the rest of the list that the song came from to the queue. (The queue gets overwritten)
• Right click one or more songs to add them to the top ("play next") or the bottom ("add to queue") of the queue.
• Everything in the queue can be removed or rearranged by drag-and-drop

EDIT: I updated the terminology to match the new Spotify. Items are no longer yellow and white, but are now under separate headings and in the same color instead.

I completely appreciate the problem-- which is something like "food"-- where Food stands for Music.

Your analogy with the "refrigerator" is quite good actually.  Using your good analogy, I would say that the current situation with the 1.0.0 to 1.0.13 series of "refrigerators" have made me throw up my hands with "refrigerators"-- I need good "food" kept good to eat-- So I have settled for "ice"-- the old technology-- the 0.9.x series of players-- which work quite well and are stable.

I just hope the Refrigerator company does not Ban the use of "ice"-- if you get my drift.

I am using Window Desktop 1.0.12 and I can easily edit the Spotify queue.

Answer: 

Search for (for example) Looking Glass. The song you were looking for "Brandy" is at the top of the list. What luck. Double click it. Lovely. When the song is done...wait. What's this? Fifty songs you're not the least bit interested in hearing are in the "Next Tracks" section of the Queue, including multiple versions of "Brandy" (one with a stupid intro from Charlie's Angles - seriously?!!) No way to edit or remove them except to have some lame work-around track in the waiting to clear the thing.

At least they stopped calling it "Your (My?) Queue" so I don't fall into the trap of thinking I will have any control over it. The Play Queue is obviously something that I can add songs to part of. The rest will just be shoved down my throat at Spotify's discretion. 

If I wanted to hear the entire "Looking Glass" catalog including multiple versions of the one song I actually wanted to hear, I'll add it to the Queue myself thank you very much.

Suggested change to Spotify - very specific request you should make to the Spotify decision-makers:

"The following changes have been made to theTerms of Service:

1. WE will choose what YOU listen to based on one choice you make.

2. Don't like it. Too bad.

3. We do not, have not and will not care what you think about this very valuable feature.

4. There is no version of this product you can pay extra for to remove this worthless and annoying extremely useful and valuable feature.  (see 2 and 3 above)"

So @javierpdlr, the short answer is: the "Next Tracks" section, which is completely uneditable.

Well, that was all very petulant. Let me put on my grown up voice and try again.

The "Next Tracks" section of the queue is really quite annoying. Tracks are added to Next Tracks and then play after the queue I have created is finished. There are seldom songs in Next Tracks that I want to hear (if I wanted to hear them, I would have added them to the queue). After the last song in Queued Tracks has finished playing, no more songs should play. Just silence. That way I know to add more songs to Queued Tracks that I want to hear.

It is incredibly frustrating that Spotify choses songs I don't want to hear and Queues them up to play without giving me any way to edit the list (Next Tracks).

I would like (as would many others here) the Next Tracks section of the Queue to go away or at least be played optionally under user control. Make it editable or deletable.

So in very specific words a request for the Spotify decision-makers:

1. Next Tracks under Play Queue should go away

2. If they just can't part with it, put it under user control

Hey @rednblu Thanks for your reply and help, well the only part that works for me to edit the queue is when on the Desktop app you go to the Play queue and could only edit the "Queued tracks" part but not the "Next Track" Part, And that is ONLY in the desktop (I am using Windows 1.0.12.161), and cannot be done on the mobile app I have in my iOs device.

Escaping the curse of the Uneditable Queue-- 1.0.13

Immediate solution . . . .

The Uneditable Queue is "visual noise" and has no meaning.  Don't try to edit it; don't worry about it-- as long as you have the "Repeat" turned off.

In 1.0.13, it is obvious that the Uneditable Queue is nonsense to be ignored.  If you "play" just a single track, 1.0.13 fills the "Next Tracks" section of the Queue with an infinite number of that same single track that is playing-- but those repeats never make a single sound-- if you have the "Repeat" button off.

You can change the Uneditable Queue by playing some Playlist with just one Track in it.  I suggest that a Track of "Complete Silence" would be best-- but until someone finds a track of complete silence, I suggest >> this track <<  as a good track to "Play" of calming, gentle, and refreshing ocean noise to cancel all of that nonsense in the Uneditable queue.

The Uneditable queue is nonsense for you, so ignore it-- because that Uneditable queue never plays until after all of the Editable queue that you control has played.  That is, if you are playing the "Radio" in which you are accepting the forced repeats from the Spotify radio station, and if you Queue any number of tracks, the tracks that you control are all played first, before you are thrown back under the power of the forced repeats from the Spotify radio station.

Once I got over the absurd nonsense in the "Next Tracks", I very much liked the Performance of 1.0.13-- even though 1.0.13 still lacks the priority functionality of 0.9.x.

1.0.13 still cannot find and organize the parts of the Spotify catalog for which you pay your monthly fee.  You still need 0.9.x for any serious and hassle-free listening.

Would the following request to the Spotify decision-makers capture your "requirement"?

• Please put a checkbox labeled "Delete everything in the Uneditable Queue" immediately above "NEXT TRACKS" in the queue.  If this "Delete everything in the Uneditable Queue" is checked, then 1) Nothing in the "NEXT TRACKS" queue will play and 2) All of the "NEXT TRACKS" section including the label "NEXT TRACKS" will be blank.

If the Spotify decision-makers would give you the above, would that suffice?

As I mainly use Spotify in my iOs device, I would like for ALL the Queue to be editable in my iOs Mobile device, as for now nothing of the Spotify queue is editable on the iOs App.

If the Spotify Queue worked the same as the Queu of "Apple Music App" as shown in the video ( https://youtu.be/7waOe-5GP-U ) it would be great.

This is how the Queue works in Apple Music App:

1- HISTORY:  Shows the tracks previously played. If you touch the three dotted "..." button next to a track in the "history" section you will have several options to do with that track, 2 of those options are:

            *Play Next:  Will put that song in the first place of the "UP NEXT" section.

            *Add to Up Next: Will put that song in the last place of the "UP NEXT" section.

2- NOW PLAYING: Shows the song that is Now Playing

3- UP NEXT: Shows the songs that will play after the "NOW PLAYING" Song. You could Easily just move any song (Drag &Drop) within the "UP NEXT" section or you could even Move the song to any part of the "RESUME" section.

4- RESUME: Shows the songs that will play after the last "UP NEXT" Song. You could Easily just move any song (Drag &Drop) within the "RESUME" section and you could even Move the song to any part of the "UP NEXT" section.

I am currently a huge fan of the Google Music service, but considering a switch to Spotify.  However, I am really confused and bummed out with the way the queue works in the desktop and app version of Spotify.  The flexibility is terrible compared to Google.  Will this system be changed any time soon to make it more like Google Music?

@azbdad The short answer is no. I think it is pretty clear from this thread that Spotify doesn't give a flying truck that their queue sucks or that their users are crying out for it to be fixed. Go to Google Music..

This idea is CRUCIAL. The current Spotify play queue is comically bad. I used to subscribe to Google Play Music, and this is the main feature that is making me consider going back to it.

Does anyone know what insane reasoning there is behind having a *locked, uneditable* queue? I'm trying, but can't come up with a sensible explanation. 

The solution is, of course, to just get rid of the locked queue. It serves no purpose. WinAmp did a proper user interface 20 years ago, it's not very hard.

And please add a bloody dislike/"never play"-button while you're at it, thank you! Why are we waiting 3 years for fundamental UI stuff like this?
