Make entire play queue editable

There's currently two queues in Spotify:

  • The editable queue. ("Queued tracks")
  • The locked queue. ("Next tracks")

If you press the Skjermbilde-2015-04-10-20.52.53.png queue button with tracks in both lists, you can see that these two queues follow each other. The editable queue always plays first.

The problem is having a locked queue at all.

You can't empty it without interrupting playback, and you'll have to use a workaround to do so. You can't reorder it or add or delete songs. After finishing the editable queue, Spotify always continues playback from the locked queue.

The workaround is starting playback at the very last item on a page. The locked queue will then have no further items. Then you can continue by purely using the queue right-click function instead of double-click or enter. This adds items to the editable queue. These tracks can then be reordered and deleted as you wish.

This UI behaviour is, however, not very user-friendly and quite frankly really annoying. It's also very unconventional having two queues in a music player. I've never seen any other software using either a dual-queue system or a locked queue system.

Here's a good implementation suggestion from user Styrke:

----

Google Play Music's queue system is really easy to understand and use. Just do what they do.

I can describe it by three (3) easy bullets:

  • Double clicking a song starts playing it and adds the rest of the list that the song came from to the queue. (The queue gets overwritten)
  • Right click one or more songs to add them to the top ("play next") or the bottom ("add to queue") of the queue.
  • Everything in the queue can be removed or rearranged by drag-and-drop

----

EDIT: I updated the terminology to match the new Spotify. Items are no longer yellow and white, but are now under separate headings and in the same color instead.

Updated: 2016-12-16

Hey everyone, now you can edit your Play Queue on your Desktop, Android and iOS device. You can add songs to 'Up Next', remove songs and clear the queue. Thanks for continuing to bring us great ideas!

Looks like this feature snuck into the latest release (on Windows at least)

 No, it's not?

At least, I can't find any way to remove a track from the Next Songs list. I'm just in my try three months, pay one, trial... I've mostly been throwing a playlist in (local radio station's top 1000 of all time list) and shuffle play it. This works fine when I'm listening from my phone, I just skip to the next track of something plays that I don't want to listen to. On my windows PC however, I tend to want to look ahead because I'll often have music playing in the background while doing things around the house. I don't want to have to walk over to the PC every time a song comes up I don't like, I want to sort this out for the next hour in advance or so. It's completely baffling to me that this is not possible with Spotify, this is completely basic functionality that I've been using since 1998 or so with Winamp.

Honestly, I have to say, playlists are helping to convince me of the added value Spotify has, but **bleep** like this is making me want to quickly cancel again. I just really can't understand why on earth anyone would design an interface like this?! If it can't do this, I'm thinking I'm still better off keeping a personal library because I at least have the freedom to use properly designed software (like Mediamonkey).

edit: Ugh, I didn't even realise this was suggested over four years ago... That's depressing, and truly makes you look like a bunch of incompetent fools Spotify...

Wow! I actually cannot believe it but we've been given reordering!

I'm almost afraid to say anything for fear it was a mistake by Spotify, and they will change it back.

For all the griping I have done, I have to say "Thanks Spotify".  This is a very big deal for many of us.

Next step- Is Android updated the same way?....

rocket_fish

Whaaaaaaaa, I, I, I.................

Hmmmmmmm...........

I..............

Well............

Sh*^#*!&*^#t

I guess a great big THANKS to Spotify for this innovative and cutting edge addition to their queue. We all greatly appreciate it and are grateful that it only took 4+ years of us griping, complaining and threatening to leave (well I am sure some did more than threaten) for it to be implemented.

Another thanks to all those who added to this thread. While I am sure it was ignored in the most part by Spotify, I have to only imagine that it’s persistent outcries played some part in getting this changed for the betterment of all. Give yourself a pat on the back, grab a beer and listen to your music on shuffle with the ability to take out that one track you don’t want to hear (before it comes on).

Cheers!

You are joking?!

Give me a shout when these changes are implemented and I'll give it another
look!

People power (takes three years)!

I swear, unless you are a bureaucrat sitting in an office, dreaming up
random ways to justify your wage by installing arbitrary measures that make
no sense, and provide no benefit to anyone...there's no way anything ever
gets done. The only things that ever get done are the things that no-one in
their right mind gives a **bleep**ing **bleep** about. Anyway, we'll see.

Best regards,

Congratulations!

Everyone!

But does it work for Everyone?

EricInWisconsin

Is it still working for everyone?  I got a new update last night, and now my reordering is not working. Not sure what is happening now!

rocket_fish

Still works for me but I never got a new update.

EricInWisconsin

Working again... I'll just shut up and enjoy this long awaited feature. Next one to go after is "remove from queue"

rocket_fish

I can remove from queue, simply select and hit the delete button, poof, its gone.

Hooooooowever, I just realized yesterday that Spotify took away the bell notification icon so we no longer can get desktop notifications about new releases and such (not that it worked great anyways). Now we need to get all notifications via email or push (which I have turned off because they are annoying and should be able to check when I am actually using Spotify). This thread (https://t.co/FvRQCqv0vh) is 31 pages now of people who are pissed off and has only been going on for 4 weeks.

For the love of god Spotify, get your s*#^t together.
