Remote control.

Hello,

It could be great to be able to remote control my computer Spotify app from the Spotify mobile device app. (iPhone un my case)

Now that Connect has officially been announced and started rolling out, I'll mark this as implemented.

This would definately be a great new feature. Even with third-party apps out there that can do it I feel like it would be so much simpler and easier if it was built-in. No needing to download some server software onto my computer or anything. Plus, having the ability to control the spotify queue rather than just select songs would be great, that way I don't have to constantly be pulling out my iPhone to change the track. Since there is already some synching going on for tracks I star or add to a playlist I feel like it shouldn't be too hard to also just sync the queue or something like that. Hopefully this does become a new feature, just one more way spotify tops iTunes.

Hate to bring up a competitor here, but the fact is that Rdio is currently doing this beautifully. Every Rdio player (web, computer, or mobile) on any device is either the current player or a remote. If the player is a remote, there's a button at the bottom that says "Play Here Instead" (Remote control mode. Rdio is playing elsewhere but can be controlled from here.) Click that button, and the music seamlessly switches to that player and all other players become that player's remote.

So I could use literally any other computer or mobile device to control the music on any other computer or mobile device. Typically I use it to control my main desktop/soundsystem with my Android phone or my Linux laptop, but the possibilities are endless.

I can come home with the mobile app playing on my headphones, turn on my PC and switch to my desktop speakers, then later I can leave and switch back to my mobile and plug it into my car for a drive. I never have to find my place or reload my queue when switching devices.

This is a HUGE selling point for Rdio for me. The main thing keeping me from subscribing (i'm using a trial period) is their secretive stance on their streaming quality, vs Spotify's very public push for all 320kbps.

Two complaints I have with their system: 1) I can't remotely control the volume with the mobile app. Sucks. I know the "Spotimote" app does this. 2) Switching playback between devices isn't seamless. In other words, when I switch from my desktop to my mobile mid-song, I have to then press play on my mobile, and it starts at the beginning of the track instead of where I left off.

In summary:

  • The full-featured Spotify mobile app should be able to perform all functions remotely on another player (any player to any player is a neat idea, but mobile-to-computer is really what most of the use would be.)
  • Make playback easily and seamlessly switchable between devices (sync the play queue)
  • Remote volume control.

I can't emphasize enough how huge this remote feature is. For me, and possibly for many others, this is more than just a nifty little feature, it's a major selling point in a growing market and could be an important premium subscriber draw.

Would love to have a remote setup for spotify like Tango Remote!!! I use my ipad as the media player and iphone as remote. Works flawlessly for playing my library!!

I really think this would be a great idea as my computer is set up to play through my hifi and I would love to be able to use my android phone to control it

Another vote for this one. I'm a spotify fan and at this time I've got 4 devices capable of playing Spotify: computer, mobile phone, WD TV Live and an Okyo receiver.

The Onkyo comes with an app for Android which is... wel... not that brilliant. There's a Spotify section which let's you play music, but it misses tons of functionality and things like searching is nearly impossible to do (in a proper way). Basically, Onkyo is never going to produce a Spotify-like app, since that's obviously not their core business.

This could all be solved when the Spofity app on my mobile device (or PC) was able to act as a remote for the Onkyo. It could be really simple. The only thing it has to do is instruct the Onkyo what to play. All the other functions like searching, playlists and what more should remain where they belong: in the Spotify desktop or mobile app.

I notices there are also a lot of requests for DLNA, but DLNA is tricky because it enables recording. Well, this remote idea doesn't do that, and it's far more easy to implement imho. So I'd say: make our day!

Great idea!!, tired of downloading third party shoddy stuff from the android store. But pleaseeeeeee! let us select artists, playlists etc from the remote and it not just be a play/pause, forward/back feature!

Just a +1 - I paid for SpotRemote, which does this perfectly - but I'd love to be able to have it as part of Spotify app itself, particularly if it allowed for closer integration with e.g. support for local files. Cleaner.

There are some third party apps for this, but they are clunky, slow, and most importantly do not allow you to browse and choose music or arrange playlists, just stop start and skip.  A spotify native remote control app should be included with premium subscription.

a built in remote would be amazing, i could control what's playing on my dock from the sofa!

This would be so great. The third-party solutions are way too limited. If it's not the way you intend to go, give  the opportunity for those third-party apps to have a more complete api at least as far as Premium subscribers are concerned.
