[Connect] Option to deactivate Spotify Connect

I want to have the opption to turn it off. Please fix this, i wan't to listen to music and still be online without connect starts.

Please fix this.

Hey everyone,

It seems that this idea ended up in the wrong board accidentally, so we're bringing it back.

We're keeping the Not Right Now status, as we don't have any immediate plans to implement this. As soon as we have any new information to share, rest assured we'll check back in here.

Take care.

Bloating Spotify with unnecessary features while ignoring solutions that people having been requesting FOR YEARS. I'm this close to seriously just moving to youtube music. You clearly don't care about your customers.

I did. Youtube music isn't perfect but they don't have this issue so I am
happy.

Is there any way to control this other than creating a separate WiFi network?

For a long time, I have been having trouble with Spotify on my phone, where if I come to work and switch to using my work headphones, while putting my earbuds in my pocket, Spotify will sometimes switch from playing on the work PC to playing music from the speakers of my phone.

After some thorough testing, I've identified what's very likely causing the random device switching in Spotify. I'll briefly explain the scenario and suggest improvements that Spotify's development team might consider implementing.

Issue Explanation:The unexpected device switching appears to be triggered by brief Bluetooth connections from wireless earbuds. When placed in their charging case in my pocket, the earbuds occasionally disconnect momentarily from the charging contacts. This brief disconnection powers them on for just a few seconds, allowing them to briefly connect to my Android phone via Bluetooth. Spotify detects this momentary Bluetooth connection through Android's "Nearby Devices" permission and automatically switches playback from my PC to my mobile device.

Technical Details:
  • Device: Bluetooth earbuds with auto-connect behavior when briefly powered on
  • Scenario: Earbuds momentarily disconnecting inside charging case (due to movement, charging interruptions, or minor contact issues)
  • Result: Brief Bluetooth activation triggers Spotify's automatic playback switch
Suggested Solutions: To mitigate unintended device switches, I propose Spotify consider the following adjustments. I think one would be enough, but it would not be a bad idea to consider all of them:
  • Introduce a short delay before automatically switching playback when detecting a new Bluetooth connection, verifying the stability of the connection, before resuming playback.
    • Optionally allow users to configure the delay duration via app settings.
  • Do not resume playback if the nearby device that triggered a device switch is no longer connected.
  • Implement a user confirmation prompt that appears on both involved devices before switching playback automatically.
    • Include a user preference checkbox to "Always allow switching for this device," with an accessible setting to reset these preferences if needed.
Currently, disabling the "Nearby Devices" permission on Android prevents the issue, but doing so also removes a valuable and convenient feature. Therefore, an internal solution within Spotify would be preferable.

This issue has been not only disruptive but also embarrassing – having music unexpectedly start playing from my phone’s speaker in a shared office, mid-song, is a situation I’d really like to avoid. I am not embarassed of my music, but I do not enjoy forcing it on colleagues and coworkers. It turns a technical annoyance into a professional and social discomfort.

Seems like I am screaming into the void on this one, but I like to listen to podcasts in the car and music on the computer. Pretty inconvenient to have to find what I was listening to, especially while driving.

My good people, I gave up on Spotify. For podcasts, I now use AntennaPod. Check it out at antennapod dot org

From their website:

AntennaPod is a podcast player that is completely open. The app is open-source and you can subscribe to any RSS feed. AntennaPod is built by volunteers without commercial interest, so it respects your privacy while giving you full control.

If there is anything that convinces me to cancel my Spotify account, its this "feature". I cannot stress enough how much I hate this feature. In my vehicle I have the Bluetooth volume at max because my vehicle's volume is so quiet, but at the office I have the volume at about 1/5th. So when Connect screws up and switches over to my phone while I'm sitting at my desk it doesn't just change what I'm listening to, it changes the volume to 5x what I want. Its extremely jarring, occasionally painful, and I can't believe I'm still paying for this privilege.

This feature should be optional. It's annoying because I play different things on different devices depending on the setting: work (work laptop), home (pc and phone), gym (phone). I don't want those getting overridden every time I switch contexts.
