[Playlists] Smart Playlists (Nested)

A smart playlist consists of other playlists, as one big joined playlist - it can be played in sequence or shuffled.

I believe this could be a game changer for the Spotify (playlist) eco-system.

Implementation

  • In playlist creation, allow the user to add "sub" playlists
  • Also let them add other smart playlists
  • Playlists can be shared/reused in multiple smart playlists
  • Regular songs can still be added alongside playlists.

NOTE: This is not accomplished by playlist folders! See below.

Benefits over playlist folders

  1. Playlist Reuse: Any number of smart playlists can share a playlist! whereas only one folder can contain a the same playlist.
This will allow having smaller, "atomic" playlists as building blocks of larger ones.

Example: Below "Oldies"  is shared / reused by different smart playlists:
Easy morning [smart] = (Oldies -> Chill
    Nostalgia [smart] = (Oldies -> 90's -> Specific songs)

  2. Sharing (A) - This could encourage playlist creators to make more nuanced playlists, as they will have a tool to compose more of them out of parts, instead of investing in a single large one, or copy-pasting like crazy.

  3. Sharing (B) - This could also open up an entire new content eco-system for compiling other creator's playlists, and re-sharing them as a new whole.

  4. Easy "temp" playlists - Currently, to combinine playlists for a party, drive, etc- you must break your organizational hierarchy to create a folder.
This causes a mess to be cleaned later.
Having a single "temp" smart playlist would allow you to change it's contents on the fly, without messing up your playlist organization.

I have more ideas, but I'll add them as a reply so this is more readable 🙂

I realize this is not a small feature - but for a few years I've felt It's absence, and I really believe this could be a game changer  -  if done properly.

Happy to hear any thoughts! 🙂

Idea:

Use the include/exclude button in the current playlist's settings to select another palylist and include or exclude it's songs in the current playlist for the current session.

Design:

The excluded sogns will be grey and the icluded songs are marked with an icon.

Advanteges:

With this feature you are able to combine two playlists without having to make a new one, or to listen to a playlist without the need to skip songs you've been listening to alot latley.

Hey,

It would be grate to be able to build a playlist that includes another playlist and automatically updated with it.

For example, I have a playlist of all my liked songs, and a different playlist of top songs of artists I don't know but got recommended to try. I update both regularly, but I actually find it more fun to listen to a shuffle on both, so I keep a third playlist containing both. I find myself needing to add every new song to multiple playlists every time (not only 2, I simplified here a bit, but it gets the idea).

If I could make a playlist that points to some other playlists and automatically gets updated with them, it would be amazing and will save me a lot of time.

Hope that other users seek the same:)

Yes, Spotify needs smart playlists asap. I’ve switched to Apple Music and they are so powerful

Perhaps reconsider this feature?

It seems like a very valueable idea, and i'm pretty sure it add's extra data so the autosuggest feature spotify focus on, can do it's job even better.

I think a unique feature would be to be able to divide an existing playlist into at least two different sections. With this feature, Spotify users could keep all the music they like in one playlist, but divide it to their liking.  For example, One could have a study music playlist with two sections: instrumental and lyrical. This would be more organized than having three playlists: one for instrumental, one for lyrical, and one for both. Spotify users would be able to choose to listen to all sections of the playlist or just one, keeping their music library organized.

Years ago you could choose "RPM Playlist" and Spotify would automatically generate a playlist to match your pace/cadence, populated with songs unique to you and based on your listening patterns. It was awesome, Spotify was the ultimate exercise partner and there was no thinking or choosing to be done before you trained - just pop RPM on and go, after a few moments music to match my energy was filling my ears!
