Experiencing delay with Spotify when streaming to multiple Airplay 2 devices. Works with Apple Music

Updated on 2021-08-07

Hello everyone,

We apologize for any confusion we have caused. To clarify, Spotify will support Airplay 2. Please continue to use this thread to add your votes and comments.

We’ll post updates when they become available.

Hey there,

will Airplay 2 also come for the tvOS app? I am Air playing from my Apple TV and the Spotify app and have lots of troubles with it. I thought it’s an Airplay problem, now I guess it’s due to the fact that Spotify uses Airplay 1?

@Lenny12, AirPlay 1 had one mode, realtime. AirPlay 2 introduced a second mode called buffered. In Realtime mode the iPhone downloads the stream, transcodes it to ALAC and then sends it over the network to the AirPlay device. In buffered mode the iPhone simply gathers up a playback URL and hands the URL off to the AirPlay device. After then the iPhone is only used as a remote control. This eliminates the typical AirPlay 1 (realtime) 2 second lag. It also improves battery life because the AirPlay endpoint it doing all the work. OGG is not a supported codec for buffered audio. Maybe this is why Spotify is holding out. For Spotify to support buffered mode they would have to transcode to AAC on their end which would require extra server resources. Their browser interface uses AAC so it isn't like they can't offer AAC endpoints. So I'm not convinced OGG is the hold up. I think Spotify is just playing games with us.

Hmm.. this just gave me an idea. Run Spotify in Mobile Safari and then AirPlay from Safari. I just tested this and it runs in buffered mode. Playback controls are instant and I can turn off my phone and playback continues.

i just hope they’ll soon bring an update for iOS, tvOS, an macOS to support Airplay 2!

when I stream Spotify via Airplay to my speakers I have connection loss after pausing a track and overall bad performance. Spotify is the only app with this problem. YouTube Netflix Apple Music and so on works fine.. I don’t wanna switch to Apple Music I just want Spotify to work properly.

Can someone from Spotify comment on the implementation progress? Because of the lack of Airplay 2 support, you will loose customers to Apple Music (and probably are).

Spotify, any news on when AirPlay 2 will become available? I like your product, but the two-second delay when using it in the home is extremely grating. Enough to make me seriously consider switching to Apple Music.

WhyDontYouDoIt

Spotify is as oblivious and ignorant as always. Proper *****bags.

Can anyone explain me how I can set up a Spotify multiroom system controlled from my phone or computer?

Spotify Connect seems to work on one device at a time only? Same situation with Google Cast.

I have Alexa, but this is unbearable being controlled by voice only, also not a good solution with several people in the house.

I know Sonos, which is fine. But seriously, not gonna spend that amount of money for soundbars and subs for several TVs (plus I don't fancy their energy consumption in standby).

Mid 2022, still no Airplay2 ..
