Ongoing performance issues on iOS devices - app being slow/crashing within a few minutes of playback

Hey folks,

We had received reports that some of you were experiencing technical issues on your iOS devices (running version 8.8.72.623 or higher). The app was crashing or the playback was suddenly stopping.

The issue was fixed but it seems it has resurfaced shortly after.

It is currently being investigated.

Hey folks!

Our tech folks backstage have confirmed that the initial issues, which were the reasons for this OI thread have been resolved. Seeing that most of you have stopped commenting - this seems to be confirming the case.

For anyone experiencing any further iOS issues, even if they are similar to the abovementioned, we'd like to ask you to go over the following steps:

  • Clear your app's cached data;
  • See if a complete clean reinstall of the app would make a difference;
  • Check if the issue would be present when you log in with a different account; a new free account for testing purposes can be used for this;
  • If the issue is present with both accounts, you can try a different iOS device, as this could be device-related;
  • Gather your findings and create a new post about your issue in this board here, making sure you add your device's model, its OS version and your Spotify app version

Many thanks!

P.S. If you've created a new account and you wish to transfer your music - this FAQ might be of help 🙂

I was having issues with the app until a few weeks ago it started working again and now the exact same issue has reared its ugly head again and even worse this time. At least with the prior issue I could leave Spotify on my phone screen for a few minutes and it would begin to work normally. Now it won’t even do that. It’s beyond ridiculous that we are subjected to a price increase when the app has been virtually unusable with no fixes in sight for weeks. If this persists for much longer I’m going to have to switch to a streaming service that actually functions.

Still no resolution. Haven’t been able to use the app for about a month now…

Definitely not fixed, still crashing after a few songs.  Cleared cache and uninstalled the app numerous times but nothing works.  So frustrating when your paying for a premium service that does not give a great user experience.

It seems to be working normally for me now. I left the app open on my phone screen continuously for over 10 minutes and for whatever reason it seems to work fine again, even when I close and reopen the app or restart my phone. This may or may not be a fix for other people but I thought it was worth passing along just to help others avoid the same headache if possible. Hoping it doesn’t break again but so far it’s been working normally for over 24 hours, knock on wood.

The main issue seemed to always be regarding my saved playlists (of which I have a lot of) so my personal guess is it has something to do with the new iOS struggling to load them all for whatever reason.

Thanks, I do only play my saved playlists from my library. I have now
logged out so hopefully when I log in again it will fix it. If this
continues I will be cancelling my premium Spotify account.

No difference after nearly a month now. Open Spotify and everything is just blank with no imagery or anything, takes 2-5 minutes to finally kick into action and everything to appear and be running semi normally. Only to then start listening for it to crash a few songs in and rinse and repeat cycle again.

Been a Spotify user since 2017 and have never had no issues as bad this before it’s completely hopeless.

Update: I ran an experiment between 2 different iPhones. If I run the same account on different devices, the app still crashes. However if I sign in to a different account it seems to work as normal. This leads me to believe this is a data issue connected to my premium account.

On the other hand, as long as my phone is unlocked the app seems to keep playing in the background. So far my phone hasn’t overheated as it was doing before.

It seems every time I connect my iPhone to my car in CarPlay it stops playing the song it was on then starts playing my liked songs playlist from the start. Doesn’t matter what playlist it’s on. Also any of the Spotify generated playlists would play through the current playing then stop and repeat all the last 3 songs even on shuffle. It’s like shuffle isn’t working.

Most recent version of iOS and Spotify app (as of this date).

Podcasts keep trying to re download every time I open the app, even if internet is not connected. Podcasts and music playlists start playing then stop suddenly as the app crashes every 5-10 minutes. Even listening to a stream it crashes as well. This has been happening the last couple weeks, whether I listen through headphones, speakers, or directly through the phone.
I have tried all the usual fixes, log in and out, delete and re-download app, toggle between online and offline mode (to try and stop the attempted download), clear cache, toggle background app refresh, and none of it works.

Not to mention how much the app drains the battery - when something does manage to play, my battery goes from 100% to about 60% in an hour. Listening to a downloaded audiobook from another app on the other hand, I would go from 100% to 95%.

Also, the app has used 62% of my battery -large majority of the time on background - and of  the 16 minutes it was active, about 15 of those active minutes would be reopening it after it’s crashed.

And why does my phone always feel super warm after Spotify has been open for a while - I thought the overheating battery issues had been resolved?
