Playback issues: Songs going silent on Android app

We've received reports from Android users that the progress bar of a song keeps moving but there's no sound coming out. When the app is restarted, the progress bar goes back to the point where the song went silent.

Some users noticed that the issue doesn't occur when the features below are toggled off:

  • Gapless playback - found in Settings > Playback
  • Equalizer - found in Settings > Audio Quality

Hey everyone,

In case you're experiencing this issue, make sure to give it a like and provide the following info (if you haven't already):

  • Does the app switch to the next song or is it stuck on the current one (with the timer still counting)?
  • The day, time and time zone this has occurred on
  • Your device's OS version
  • The version of Spotify you're running
  • Whether this occurs when playing from the mobile device directly or when connected to another device (Bluetooth, headphones, etc.)
  • The troubleshooting steps you've tried so far
  • A video showing how things look from your end when this issue happens

Thanks! We'll pass the info on to our tech folks so they can look further into this. In the meantime, you can try the workaround of disabling Gapless playback and the Equalizer in the app's settings to see if that does the trick for you.

As always, rest assured we'll keep you posted here as soon as we have any new information to share, so Subscribe to the thread to stay tuned!

Hi, I can’t post a new thread because the captcha spins forever instead of posting. I am having this problem with iOS/desktop and podcasts, not songs. turning off gapless playback and Eq does not fix the problem.

My Question or Issue

This bug can be replicated by queueing any episode of the podcast ‘Gilbert Gottfried’s Colossal Podcast’. You will notice that the episode and ads continue to play, but with no audio, until you hit the ‘skip forward/back 15 seconds’ button, at which point the audio begins. I have not noticed this error with any other podcast, ads or not, but it happens every time I listen to any episodes of this one.

Hey there folks!

It seems like a new version of the app was recently released. Could you try updating it by following the steps here and check if you notice any difference?

It would be great if you could let us know the exact app version you're currently running, should the issue persist.

Cheers!

There has been vast number of updatedes since 2 years or so problem
appeared. Current release 8.9.56.618 is no improvement.

Hey @d0ktorn,

Thanks for sending over the details - we appreciate it!

Our tech teams are currently looking into this and we'll make sure to forward your info. In the meantime, just to make sure we cover all bases, could you double-check if you have any battery optimization running on your device? Try switching any battery saving settings off, as they may sometimes interfere with the app's performance.

Keep us posted!

  • Hi, I'm having this same issue. Here' are my details:

- does the app switch to the next song or is it stuck on the current one (with the timer still counting)?

App switch to next song

- your device's OS version

Android 14, Sony Xperia 1V

- the version of Spotify you're running

8.9.56.618

- whether this occurs when playing from the mobile device directly or when connected to another device (Bluetooth, headphones, etc.)

Both

- the troubleshooting steps you've tried so far

1. I've tried clearing cache -> thought it was working then again not working

2. It looks like if I'm not navigating away from the app then this issue won't happen. I.e., if I stay on Spotify (either with screen on/off) then it's ok, but if I let Spotify play in the background and open another app e.g. Facebook, or simply just go to my homescreen and turn off my screen, then this issue happens.

3. I've tried toggling off gapless -> so far this is ok, the issue is not there again yet

Hope you guys have this fixed soon.

Happens here on Pixel 8 Pro, Android 14. Seems only to happen when on bluetooth headphones, not in Android Auto or on Windows. Never waited if the next sog would play. Sometimes start/stop helps, but after 2nd fail i have to rstart the app.

App is update 8.9.58.572

i have this issue but on my playstation 5. The music will say its playing but theres no sound, so in order to play the music i have to open the app then close it and that usually only works for about 3 songs then it does the glitch again.

Like others I have experienced the audio turn off.

Update Spotify for Windows (64 bit)

I stream through my Windows laptop bluetooth  to my Onkyo receiver. The receiver goes to sleep after a few minutes of idle so I thought It was a receiver problem. Often I'm listening to it as back ground music and I don't always notice immediately. I have also noticed on some of those occasions the progress bar still progressing without audio, when restored the track returns to the disconnect point.

Seeing this thread helped me realize It may not be the receiver. In addition, trying to restore the music It takes several different tries to reconnect. MS fix "turn off reconnect" is usually the cure. but not always. As a experiment I switch to another audio source not Spot, and I was able to receive a stream. I also checked my internet connection on another device and it was normal.

I never suspected Spot signal disruption or overload. I'll try on a different device next time. I also recognized the problem occurs around dinner hour causing me to wonder about Spotify transmission overload.Another symptom It sometimes occurs when I try to change playlists or tracks Im listening to.
