Playback issues: Songs going silent on Android app

We've received reports from Android users that the progress bar of a song keeps moving but there's no sound coming out. When the app is restarted, the progress bar goes back to the point where the song went silent.

 

Some users noticed that the issue doesn't occur when the features below are toggled off:

  • Gapless playback - found in the app's Settings > Playback
  • Equalizer - also found in Settings > Playback

Hey folks,

 

After quite a bit of investigating, the teams at Spotify were not able to pinpoint one specific root cause for the behavior. Via all the helpful comments of people here we found a couple of remedies for this and namely toggling off:

  • Gapless playback - found in the app's Settings > Playback
  • Equalizer - also found in Settings > Playback

These have been reported back to the tech teams and they are aware of this, yet right now in this thread we are receiving inconsistent reports of whether this is fixed. We would like to bring more clarity for both users and our developers, so we will move the discussion to a new place in our Help boards to gather fresh insights.

Ah dang, for me it was really bad I couldn't get through an album without it happening, maybe 3-4 tracks at worst.
I'll let you know if it goes again.

Still happening to me; happened on my drive earlier and as I was driving, and playing with my phone is dangerous while driving I switched to the radio. When I got home, I was over 20 minutes into a 2 minute long song.

Happening on my pixel 7. Spotify is fully updated. Definitely not a network issue, the issue was occuring while I was on the subway, and still is as I write this.

When I listen to music sometimes the song just goes silent. The bar keeps moving but no sound is coming out. When I go back to the app and pause and play it returns to the position before it went silent.



I've uninstalled the app, checked for updates and cleared my cache. I've checked with different headphones and the same thing happens. I have no issue with sound from other apps. How can i fix it?

Unbelievable. I have exactly same problem (Sony Xperia IV updated Spotify) with sudden muting of tracks. The issue is might persistent and the fact that Spotify is not doing anything about it is infuriating

My Question or Issue

Earphone connected via BT, but no sound when playing Spotify but do have sound via Youtube. This happens on earphones (Buds and TCl) and headphone although in the Spotify app it says playing on my BT device

This has kept happening to me. Pretty much every time after Spotify goes into the background over the last few weeks it eventually falls into playing a track muted. I'm running Android 14 on a Sony Xperia V10, and currently have version 8.9.12.599 installed. This has been on wired headphones - I don't use anything else on my phone.

I've had this problem for years. First on my Sony Xperia 1 III, then the same problem now on my Xperia 1 V.

The issue happened while I was logging and recording the System Trace from the developer settings, so have a 100MB+ .perfetto-trace file that I'm happy to share with you. Please reach out if you are interested, and how I best can share it.

 

The issue persists even after I've:

  • Changed device
  • Cleared Cache and Storage
  • Reinstalled the app
  • Deactivated battery optimization for the Spotify app
  • Activated cross-fade. Someone in another forum post said that fixed it for them. Made no difference for me.
  • Tried with and without WiFi
  • Tried listening with and without Bluetooth device

Spotify-version: 8.9.14.543
Device: Sony Xperia 1 V, Build 67.1.A.2.208

OS-version: Android 14

 

Below, you see what happens when you listen to a silent track. It continues playing in infinity.

Hey everyone,

 

In case you're experiencing this issue, make sure to give it a like and provide the following info:

 

  • The day, time and time zone this has occurred on
  • Your device's OS version
  • The version of Spotify you're running
  • Does the app switch to the next song or is it stuck on the current one (with the timer still counting)?
  • Whether this occurs when playing from the mobile device directly or when connected to another device (Bluetooth, headphones, etc.)

If possible, feel free to include a video showing how things look from your end.

An additional detail about the behaviour is that, when the song is quiet, then pressing the 'rewind' button to listen from the start, doesn't fix it. There's still no sound. So when it happens and I want to hear the song, then I usually press the 'rewind'  twice and then forward . Then you'll hear the song. Going into the Spotify app and clicking the song again also works.
