Playback issues: Songs going silent on Android app

We've received reports from Android users that the progress bar of a song keeps moving but there's no sound coming out. When the app is restarted, the progress bar goes back to the point where the song went silent.

Some users noticed that the issue doesn't occur when the features below are toggled off:

  • Gapless playback - found in the app's Settings > Playback
  • Equalizer - also found in Settings > Playback

Hey folks,

After quite a bit of investigating, the teams at Spotify were not able to pinpoint one specific root cause for the behavior. Via all the helpful comments of people here we found a couple of remedies for this and namely toggling off:

  • Gapless playback - found in the app's Settings > Playback
  • Equalizer - also found in Settings > Playback

These have been reported back to the tech teams and they are aware of this, yet right now in this thread we are receiving inconsistent reports of whether this is fixed. We would like to bring more clarity for both users and our developers, so we will move the discussion to a new place in our Help boards to gather fresh insights.

Cheers,

I'm not sure of my knowledge on this, but I don't think most TVs are compatible with audio only format.

My CD player wouldn't play either, no input. No Spotify. Some may be equipped to work with audio only inputs. The TV audio-video signal is different. TV audio OUT for sound systems and headphones is a one way output. You might look for a Audio IN connector. My LG doesn't have one. Spot displays photos not movie clips. Somehow that works.

Thanks for the reply, but why would it work when I use another internet connection (hotspot)?

thanks for taking steps to solve it

@MihailY

People  have already done that...

I'm guessing the favourite songs list is as any other list, but I'm starting having trouble here also.

It is utterly pathetic that this is still ongoing. I am going to cancel my subscription as a result of this bug. It occurs for me in offline and online mode. It happens when mobile reception drops out and then back in so if you want to replicate it, start listening to something and then take a train journey that goes in and out of reception.

Sorry to hear about the continuing issue you are experiencing.

Some of the problems are unavoidable. When the signal is disconnected, the cellphones quit, when I pass through a tunnel or deep canyon my Satellite radio and GPS quit too. When the stream is cut, reconnection is a challenge, switching from one source to another. It's not very automatic to log in and catch the stream where we left off, assuming it can reconnect to a different source. Pairing Spot with your cell phone "Hotspot" will use data, but might be more reliable in places.

I don't understand why your stored music isn't working? Are you a subscriber? I thought it was required for storing. Some trains and planes have Wi-Fi, but it's often interrupted and requires login.

I'm not saying there isn't a problem, Some can not be fixed. In my personal experience, the problem disappeared when I corrected my data streaming setup. Details would require another page.

Good luck finding a better source for music.

Just to be clear, this happens in offline mode too, when the song is
downloaded and Spotify shouldn't be streaming it at all. If it were a
network or bandwidth issue I think the normal behaviour is for the song to
pause. This is not a bandwidth issue. What we see here is the song carries
on playing (i.e. the song time in Spotify keeps increasing) but there's no
sound. I have to force-close Spotify on Android and reopen it to fix the
problem. This is a bug in the software, which makes Spotify unusable.

My issue is ads causing the player to get stuck (desktop). This has been going on for a week at least and happened in the past, but who knows where you can find information on this forum. REALLY ANNOYING THOUGH.

I've been directed here because of a different issue. My issue isn't that the audio stops and the progress bar continues, its that the music cuts out completely. The music stops itself - like when you close the app, and then when I unpause the track it jumps to the start of the song and not where it cut out. I've had this issue for over a year and have tried numerous troubleshooting steps both with staff at Spotify and at Motorola. My phone is up to date, as it Spotify. I've clean installed apps, factory reset my phone, changed numerous settings, used a different account etc. Nothing has improved it at all.
