Smart Shuffle keeps turning itself on

Hey folks!

Some of you have reported that Smart Shuffle is automatically turning itself on again after being switched off. This is now being looked into.

Note: The Smart Shuffle feature works on a playlist-by-playlist basis. If you turn it off on one playlist, it doesn't mean that it is turned off for all playlists.

We'll keep you posted 🙂

Under investigation.

In order for us to have a better look into this, please provide us with the following details:

  • Your device + its OS version;
  • Your Spotify app version;
  • A screen recording of the issue;
  • Does this happen across devices or on a single device? E.g. if turned off on one device, does it re-appear on the same device, a different one or across all of them?
  • Does this happen when using the Connect feature or when playing normally?
  • What are the steps to reproduce the issue on your end?

Many thanks! We'll keep you posted 🙂

Hey folks!

Thank you for the patience while we're trying to identify the root cause for this issue. It does not occur for everyone so it takes a bit longer to fix.

We'd like to ask you these two follow-up questions in case you're still experiencing the issue:

  • Is this behaviour only observable with larger playlists?
  • Does it happen when using a Connect device or when the playback is playing normally via your main device?

Much appreciated! We'll be on the lookout for your replies and we'll keep you posted when there's an update 🙂

Yeah, the term in three industry is "dark patterns". A term used to
describe how an app forces you to do or experience things you never
intended to do, that have a financial benefit to the company if you do
them.

This one - the forcing of smart shuffle on us, instead of just making it an
option - had soured my relationship with what was over of my only
unquestionable good paid subscriptions I had.

I would gladly move on to a competitor if over emerged now and have started
to look into options.

I just want to listen to my music. And yeah, discover new music when I want
to. But I want to be in control, not forced into doing what they were want
me to do.

There are a few competitors and one of the better is https://www.deezer.com/en/offers

I tested Deezer for about a month and it works fine and have almost all the stuff Spotify does. However they do have a smaller cap on how big your playlists can be. 2k songs max. Spotify offers 10k. That was an issue for me but perhaps not for the majority? Anyhow, a very competent service and they do have migration tools if you want to move your playlists.

Thanks for ruining my morning with music I absolutely hate, what a miserable thing to do 😞

I use Spotify on clean Pixel Android... wth, site scrolled to the top to nag about FEEDBACK WHILE I WAS TYPING?! Good grief, no wonder your app sucks too. Aaaaanyway as I was trying to type, everything is updated and clean, and I mostly listen on Sonos speakers or bluetooth headsets, and my "Liked songs", which is diverse enough to give me suggestions that are so off the mark it's not even funny. Make. It. Stop. How hard CAN it be for an app not to turn on something you actively have turned OFF? Ask the new intern with the same issue, that is currently fixing you a latte, to fix it.

So mods, are you all just going to be quiet or can we have an update? Do we need to call share holders? How can the community you so desperately want to make a thing be heard? Not in a single thread about smart shuffle has been an update. We hate this, and it's broken on top of it. Your paying customers want to enjoy your service. So an update would be nice.

Hello, I do not have Spotify premium, however somehow, it keeps getting turned on. I also can't get back to my playlist and am stuck listening to songs I don't want to. Thank you Spotify, for giving me a feature, that I shouldn't have, specifically because I don't want it.

Guess this issue has been deemed 'low priority' by the devs; forgotten and buried. Might do the same to my Spotify Premium subscription since what the h e l l am I paying for... when I can't listen to the music I like, my way!?
The whole reason I got Spotify was because of Alexa integration (got the Desktop app). It would be difficult to find an alternative.

Minimize/Reopen Spotify, Smart Shuffle switches itself on. Turning it off and putting it in normal shuffle, every two songs it attempts to play a recommended song as if Smart Shuffle is still enabled. So I'm getting 'ghosted recommended songs'.
I even did a clean install like everyone suggested. Didn't help. Also, Private Session DOES NOT STOP the ghosted recommended songs.
Seriously, what am I paying you for, Spotify? ...Canceling my subscription.

Hi,

I've just setup a Google nest audio device and I'm getting this problem when I try to play a playlist while casting.

They always play in "shuffle" mode.

If I play on the main device I have no issues.

Do you have any update?

Thanks

Edit: Issue "auto fixed" after I added another device to cast.

I tried to add a different device to cast (I have a LG tv that supports cast) and after this, I stopped having the issue on the Google Nest Audio 🤷

I lost the control of my Spotify today. Only Autoshuffle, even if I try to play a single song through the search option. When I try to start a song, Spotify picks something else and force the Autoshuffle back on.

Everything updated, restarted, signed in'n out... Just Autoshuffle all around.

Help. Anybody?

This issue started today. The  smart auto shuffle keeps turning itself on and force playing random songs. I have recently got a new premium plan and I can't play any song I want from any of the playlist. It plays random songs. I tried restarting and everything. It still isn't working.

Shuffle play keeps coming on. When a track is selected on screen, something else plays randomly not on the playlist sometimes and shuffle turns itself on no matter how many times you turn it off, during the track that is playing! I am also still getting ads on Premium and it is happening on Windows 10, 11, Android 14 and iPadOS 18.3.1.
