[Playlists] Sorting Options for List of Playlists

I would love to be able to sort my playlists by Artists, then drill down by album so as not to clutter my Spotify. It's pretty hard to organize my playlists the current way. Any ideas on a future iteration that will enable this capability?

Updated on 2019-06-25

Hey folks,

Slight update to this idea, which we think is worth highlighting. With the recent update to Your Library on mobile, it's now possible to sort and filter your Playlists, Artists and Albums in more ways.

To find the filters, just pull down on the tab you're on, select filters and then choose the one you'd like. The 'Custom Order' filter on the Playlist section will mirror the order you have on Desktop - which means it's now possible to maintain the way your organise your tunes on Desktop across to Mobile.

We'd recommend checking out this Spotify Answer for tips on how to add playlist folders using the desktop app. They're super handy for keeping your music organized.

With the search function at the top it's also possible to drill down by Artist in your Album section. To do so, just pull down and type the name of the artist you're looking for.

Will now mark this idea as Implemented.

Thanks!

alphabetize playlists.  How hard is this.  Jeez!

I want the option to ALPHABETIZE Playlists.  I LOVE, love, love my Spotify! But finding and adding to playlists (which are ever growing) alphabetically  is an option WAY OVER DUE to your subsribers!  Help solve this issue to make listening EASIER !  Looking forward to your solution... Thanks

I want to order so last added appears first by default.

the 'quote' option is not working from the drop-down menu...

@ l3utterfish - are you referring to the Web Player or Desktop?  playlist sorting works fine on the Desktop, at least on the Mac. You can sort tracks by album, artist, track name, date added, or manually sort them by clicking on the date added a few times till the green arrow disappears - that means you're in manual sort mode.  The Web Player is hopeless for sorting though.

@ rgreaves - on the Desktop version, playlists in the side bar on the left can be manually sorted via drag & drop as well as organized by folder. not on the Web Player though.

This is about sorting the list of playlists itself in the sidebar, not tracks.

Drag & drop is pretty useless when there are more than dozen lists, if not hundreds. By folder? That's for local files only?

ps. The amount of playlists grows pretty rapidly for me, because most albums I need to add that way. I want to listen old albums with the original track listing, and often the only available version is some kind of a deluxe version with bonus tracks. Plus, the original release year is important to me (not the re-issue release year), so I add that in the playlist name. But I guess these are pretty borderline usecases. 😄

@ secondhelping - i don't see how drag & drop is useless, especially if you only have a dozen or so to organize. i have about 70 playlists and each time i create a new one, i manually drag it to where i want very quickly & easily. often times that's in alphabetical order but other times it's not, as i tend to also group by music styles or moods.  i also create folders in order to group playlists and then drag them around to my liking. i don't even have any local files added, so i use folders exclusively for Spotify tracks. ->  create "new playlist folder" from the File menu, drag the folder where you'd like it, then add playlists to that folder. the folders can also be sorted manually.

i add tracks to playlists via drag & drop as well, rather than the contextual drop-down menu, as it's much faster than scrolling thru menu subfolders.

it would be nice though to have an option to switch between alphabetized or manual sorting.

Well, not useless since it is the only way to do it now :D, but pretty useless and time consuming vs. an automatic ordering feature.

Yeah, I found this just after I replied. This helps a lot and makes the playlist view a lot less cluttered. IMHO, should be available in right mouse click too just from a UI consistency point of view. That's the reason I only now found it.

I have been a paying user for a long time now, but this idiotic aggravation will change that. The reason I will change to another service is not the actual aggravation but the response from Spotify. Spotify, remember where your funding is coming from.

this is ridiculous-All I want to do is be able to sort my playlists by name, artist, album, etc. This is the only feature that I really want, and I think it's a mistake for the Spotify community to ignore something that is so widely supported.

SUGGESTION:

Hello everyone. While thinking about this I thought of the following idea to fix the issue. Recently Spotify released "your music" as a way to sort saved music better. Currently it offers 'songs', 'albums', ' artists' and 'local files'. All these subcategories already have sorting options that work perfectly fine, so my suggestion is:

Add a new button at the side bar under 'Local files' called 'playlists'. When clicking on a little arrow next to the button, a sublist of all playlists will appear/disappear. Clicking on the button itself will make a page appear similar to the 'albums' page, but obviously with the playlists. This page Shows a playlist picture (or 4 song covers) with below it the title and description of the playlist. The page will have a sorting function similar to the album pages; alphabetical, date of creation, etc. or drag and drop for custom sorting. The sublist in the left menu could maybe be synchronised with the sorting of the page.

What do you guys think?
