How gift cards should work

I recently got a Visa gift card thinking it would work, but it doesn't as apparently Spotify doesn't accept gift cards for ongoing payments.

However, other services such as RuneScape, and I remember Club Penguin had a 'solution' for this. They allowed gift cards to be used, but once the card ran out of money (the card could no longer work) they would just stop charging and cancel the subscription until it is started again.

Why can't Spotify do this? It would be so much easier and would make it simple to manage a Spotify subscription as it ends when the card runs out. Easy.

I think Spotify should make paying for subscription services like this.
