Playlists without personalization?

My Question or Issue

Now, when I listen to most playlists (e.g. Chill Mix) or Radio playlists based on a particular song, the playlists are filled with songs that I already know and listen to often. It feels like I am in an echo chamber. Is it possible to turn off this personalization of playlists so I can be exposed to more new music? Thanks!

Hi @patio-d,

Thanks for posting in the Spotify Community, and welcome!

Unfortunately, at the moment there isn’t a way to de-personalize playlists that are made for you by Spotify.

However, there's a current Live Idea in the Idea Exchange board that you may be interested in voting for.

If the idea is something you’re interested in, I recommend adding your +VOTE to them; the more votes an idea gets, the likelier it is that Spotify will implement it, and you can read more about how feedback on ideas reaches Spotify here.

It will also be useful for you to Subscribe to it by clicking the three dots next to their title; that way, you can be sure to be informed of any relevant updates.

Let me know if you have any other questions, and have a good day!

Thanks for your response! Disappointing that there isn't a setting change I can make to improve the experience around this issue. But I will read the ideas and vote for the ones that I like.

Just deleted Spotify for the second time because of this feature — customized playlists are echo chambers, and the listening experience is more & more repetitive/claustrophobic. Not only that, but customized playlists are awful in terms of curation/music history … where I used to discover artists and tracks connected by era, genre and scene through the “radio” feature, now all I get are incoherent & disconnected collections of tracks/artists I’ve listened to before. Frustrating, to say the least.

With every update, Spotify gives more and more power to the robots. I don't need advice from the robots. The only algorithm based features that are of any interest to me is "Similar artists" and "Release radar", the rest is just spam and noise and makes it harder for me, like when playlists and folders are sorted in the order of when I last listened to it rather than in the exact order I want them to be sorted.

I wish users would have more power of the look of their playlists, and that I am not consitantly bothered with robot generated playlists containing music I have just listened to and have no intention to listen to for the next year or so.

Totally agree with you. It seems like the updates on Spotify are making the algorithm and experience worse? I use the app to get to know new songs, discover new artists, but it's just not possible at all if Spotify keeps recycling the artists and songs that I already listen to. Super disappointed with the experience. I've been using Spotify for over 5 years and it's so sad to see the service worsen with time 😕

I never use this Community, but it got to a point that I needed to express my dissatisfaction with the update really bad.
I just wish Spotify could listen to their users and at least make it an option to turn on or off the "made for you" feature.

I’m unable to view the closed issues to vote on them. It says access is denied. What needs to happen for me to be able to view and vote?

Hey @Davidthoward,

Welcome to the Community and thank you for joining the conversation.

We appreciate the heads up about this. We've updated the link mentioned in the marked solution so you can add your vote (with the thumbs-up button) to show your support for it.

If anything else comes up, the Community will be here for you.

Two of those links are reading "Access Denied"

So sad. It’s just another smart way they found to increase listeners and people who download the app. They aim to most common denominator. They couldn’t care less about you being exposed to other music. It’s easier to use their algorithm to decide for you which new singer you might like. It goes well with all other streaming services. They will always offer you content based on things you liked before in order to hook you on their service.

I'd love to be able to find what's most popular among Spotify listeners.  For example, if I search for an 80s playlist, I get a "Made For You" one, but not what most people are listening to. I'd prefer an option that provides the latter.  This helps when you're making playlists for groups rather than just yourself. (Or in my case, trying to find songs for my cover band to play.)

Why do all the playlists Spotify creates for me repeat the same artists so often? Is there a way to stop this?

I'm talking about playlists like daylist or other "Made for You" playlists. They have so many repeated artists within the playlist that Spotify created for me.
