Spotify on iOS randomly causing macOS Continuity to show Safari in Dock

Spotify on iOS randomly causing macOS Continuity to show Safari in Dock

Plan: Premium

Country: United States

Devices: iPhone 13 Pro, 2021 MacBook Pro 16"

Operating System: iOS 17.1.2, macOS 14.1.2

My Issue

When I'm playing podcasts in Spotify on my iPhone, macOS keeps showing a Safari Continuity icon in my Dock. If I click on the Safari icon on my Mac, it opens the "open.spotify.com" link for the podcast I'm currently listening to. Is this expected behavior, or some kind of bug?

Hey there, @nhubbard.

Thanks for posting in the Community!

To begin checking if it'll make any difference, could you give Spotify a clean reinstall and clear the cache and cookies on Safari on your laptop?

If these steps don't make any difference we even recommend reaching out directly to Apple in case they can suggest something from their end, if they have any info on the matter or if there's probably a setting you can adjust.

Keep us posted and we're here in the meantime 🙂

Hello @Elena,

I have tried that and it didn't make any difference. It's still showing it, and it also happens with music occasionally, not just podcasts.

It seems like Spotify might (unintentionally?) be using the Apple Handoff programming framework (https://developer.apple.com/handoff/), but it's sending a link to the current media in a web browser instead of a link to open the current content in the Spotify desktop app.

Hi there,

Thanks for letting us know. We'll happily pass your feedback onto the appropriate team. Be advised however that we cannot say for certain at the moment when or if this is going to get implemented.

Cheers!

Hi,

I also have noticed this behavior of Spotify on my Mac, the only difference is that it is not random at all on my side, the Continuity Icon shows up whenever the Spotify app is open on my iPhone.
