What's new in this version:
- New: When you first install the app, Spotify will store your data in the most efficient location on your phone/device.
- New: From within settings, you can clear all temporary data and downloaded tracks stored on your device.
- Fixed: Spotify would occasionally get stuck in Offline mode
- Fixed: The app will no longer crash due to a lack of memory.
- Fixed: Radio won’t crash when loading artists.
Please note: if you were using the Spotify app already and you want to change the location where your playlists are stored, you need to exit the Spotify app, go into your device's Settings, Apps, Spotify, then tap Clear data and Clear cache.
Note: If you're having trouble with an update, please always make sure to go through the [Android] Troubleshooting Spotify steps before posting.
oldapartment - I apologise for the mix-up. Don't worry, your Premium account hasn't been deleted. I've just sent an email back to you, it should explain everything.
agree 100%. why cant spotify give us our buttons back in the settings menu so we can choose where we want all those gbs worth of music to go. Grrr!

@oldapartment wrote:I upgraded Spotify to this release on my phone (Galaxy S Relay) and Spotify will no longer recognize my premium status, although it was working before the upgrade. I clicked "Get Premium" within the app and logged into Spotify, where it recognized my premium status and I still have premium until 4/23.
I have restarted my device and logged out and back into Spotify before and after the restart.
This is the reply I got when I submitted my issue to the support team via email: "Hi there
Thanks for getting in touch with us.
I can see you've emailed us from your account so there's no need for us to ask you for any security details.
I have gone ahead and removed your account for you now.
Please let us know if there is anything else we can help you with :)"
I shouldn't be surprised but I am appalled.
Will see if I can get someone to look into this for you.
Peter
Thanks because that tone-deaf email was really ridiculous. (I am currently streaming spotify radio, still log in on my desktop and see my premium status and account still exist so...not sure what's going on. I sent a reply but who knows what I'll get back.
Lol you asked them about your lost premium account and they instead replied you saying they removed your account? hahahha this one is truly epic and sad.
Guys, look at the changelist of newest Deezer android app, they will get a mini-player so that you can switch songs while texting or surfing the web. Also they will have interface lifting and some other few changes, but we have to still beg for ability to change storage place and horizontal mode...

why does it not flip the view when device is flipped? That has never been a working feature - but it sure is anoying. I use my tablet in a docking device and since I can't read sideways I still use a very old version that is horizontally aligned. Any way to make it 'flip'?
Because they have it set to portrait only mode in the Manifest. This is an issue with all the mobile apps - it's probably because they think the UI doesn't look right in landscape mode.

Same problem here 14.53 GB on my SD, 6.57GB available.
Internal storage with 1.48 GB, 667MB available. (Wiko Slim)
I used the former workaround but lost everything with the upgrade.
Hello everyone,
Save to External SD Card is now working for a Galaxy S2 after Spotify version 0.5.12.52 was installed and instructions to delete all data, delete cache and then unistall and reinstall this version were followed. However can agree with other comments that haveing to download all playlists again is a pain, especially if you have multiple devices, but does seem to have solved this long running issue for some devices.
However, I have a Galaxy Tab 2 Note (GT-N8010 Android 4.1.2) and a Galaxy Tab 2 7" (GT-P3110 Android 4.0.4) both with 32GB external SD Cards. When the steps above are carried out data is still being saved to internal memory. External SD's have in excess of 20GB of available space before I started downloading playlists
Path to external SD in theses tabs is the same: /mnt/extSdCard, while Path to the external sd card on Galaxy S2 is /storage/extSdCard.
Any advice on how I can get save to external SD for these tablets working with this newest version?
Tabs are not Rooted.
Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the response:)
I've now cleared cache from system application manager and reinstalled the app, and now the cache is properly stored in extSdCard. Like if the in-app button which clears the cache left some residuals which affected storage detection. Also in spotify_preferences.xml the path is now correctly pointing to extSdCard. Strange, but I'm glad that this is working now:) Anyway reconsider option to change storage place, it would be perfect then and it would suit all users.
Glad to hear that it is now working, I'll take the rest as feedback to the rest of the team.

@atexit - Just want to say thanks for the support you're giving here.
Finally an Android dev has stuck their head over the parapet and is interacting with the end users.
We have been waiting for this kind of support for a long time. There is only so much that the support people who work here in the community can do when problems get very platform specific like this.
Please don't be a stranger.
Glad to help!
I unfortunately only have so much time, and most of that time has to go to dev work, but when I can I'll continue to check in here. 🙂 (Just don't expect lightning speed in the replies.. :D)

custom folder structure on SD card and you can't tell how much of storage is spotify actually taking. However most annoying thing about this is that the funtionality was implemented in older versions and for some reasons taken out. I don't know how good programmers you hire, but I bet that it's not THAT hard to at least display the current location of the cache and it's size...
If you want to find out what path we're using, we log it to logcat. Also, we should still respect old custom cache paths set using the old app. Our reasoning is that we try to keep our settings display as clean and unconfusing as we can in order to make things easier for non-power users.

Thanks for that answer! If you want to hide strange and confusing settings just add "Advanced" button which would hide all that complicated settings:) And keep in mind that Android users are used to "advanced" and sometimes complicated settings or manipulations;)

I'll take that as feedback as well. No promises. 😉

Exactly, if i wanted to be treated like a noob, i would have bought an iPhone. Having an "Advanced Settings" tickbox will deter people who dont know what there doing and allow us so called "Power Users" to configure the application how we want.
Still no Landscape mode; Spotify still sucks.
What about devices with 3 different storage locations, like Samsung W (1 Gb system storage, 1.7 Gb 'external storage', 16 Gb external SD card) ?
Currently, downloaded tracks are stored on my externalSD card (thanks to the 'old version app trick'), but I noticed that many apps don't even see my external SD card, using instead the small 'external storage' viewed as a SD card. I'm afraid this will be the case with Spotify and therefore I'm not disposed to update. But I'm wondering if it will update automatically at next login...
Anyway, I'm fed up with this deplorable option of not allowing to make one's own choice and I'm already looking for another music streaming service more respectful of the needs of their clients. For me, levelling downwards is not an option.
My feedback is that I want to be able to choose where my data is stored and not have Spotify decide for me.
I see everyone's point on being able to choose - and maybe being able to utilize both - but considering how much this update has improved my experience, I'm still happy with how it is. Prior to this update, I was literally undownloading and downloading playlists every morning before leaving for work and using 20-30 minutes to figure out "what do I want to listen to for the next 10 hours".
I went to the effort of downloading an older version and then upgrading to the latest one all for nothing since it seems external storage had already been added. lol
Thank you for allowing external card storage. I can now delete my mp3s and the hassle that go with them and just use Spotify.
But I'd prefer a dark background in the playlist views.
Performance has been great so far on an HTC EVO V. Smooth scrolling, great audio, songs load fast over wi-fi, no audio hiccups, and scrobbling works fine. I don't know how well earlier versions worked so I have no basis for comparison, but I'm happy with the latest version.

Don't celebrate too soon... For what I read about it, if the app is allowing external card storage, it's just because it's currently the roomiest space around. But as soon as the available space on this location is smaller than the one on any other on the phone, it should switch to it, resulting in the loss of all your local tracks and playlists. Not likely to happen in most cases, but possible, depending of the configuration of the device.
