Well there's been another update.
A noticeable improvement. Stopped only once during the first track of the downloaded playlist and only for a couple of seconds.
Only about 10 seconds before working out it was supposed to move to track 2.
And got through about a 40 seconds of that before it went non-responsive, black screen and stop-start...
Apple's streaming service is on its way. Get your act together or you're has-beens.
