Can't log in to my Windows App, getting "Illegal scope" when forwarded to the website

Can't log in to my Windows App, getting "Illegal scope" when forwarded to the website

I did a clean re-install of Spotify because I had issues with it not being able to play songs at all, after that - BAM, I can't physically log in anymore!

I have the same problem

Nvm its working now.

How did you fix this error?

How did you manage to fix it, or did it just self-fix?

I had to download the vpn and select the region that is installed in the spotify account. Everything worked

Hi there folks,

Thanks for reaching out.

There was a minor blip in our network services which caused this behaviour. We managed to resolve it, so everything should be working normally now. Please let us know if you still face any such issues.

Be advised, it's also best practice to ensure that the country on your account is actually the one you're currently in, this way you can ensure everything works well. You can change it if necessary as shown here.

Let us know if you need anything else.

howdy,

didnt change anything

The app itself is not working. I can't go to an artist's place and just play music.

I'm also experiencing this issue. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the windows app, but whenever i try to log into the app, the browser displays the error "Illegal scope"

Hi there folks,

Thanks for reaching out!

Our tech team is aware of this, however, we're unable to give a timeframe for if or when it will be fixed, as it seems to be related to specific setups.

What you can try in the meantime to see if it makes any difference:

  1. Log out from the desktop app
  2. On the login screen where a QR code appears, click on Preferences and change to "No Proxy
  3. Once that's done, restart the app and scan the QR code to log in

Keep in mind that we never recommend using any VPN with Spotify.

Cheers.

This did not work for me. I am still getting this error.

Edit: I had to switch from autodetect to none to auto and then it magically worked.

This advice doesn't work at all. The "illegal scope" error is not even displayed in the Spotify application but in my web browser, and it's sent there by your web servers. I don't see how the proxy used in the application can have any influence on that. I have tried switching proxy settings multiple times as the previous poster mentions but this has no apparent effect.

There is also no QR code login option, even though I've used it in the past. Only username login is offered, and then you have to paste a code sent to your email address.

I can login to https://open.spotify.com just fine, but not play any music. When I hit play, the button visually responds but has no other effect.

If I try to visit my account overview page I get an "oh no" error page, even though I can see that I'm logged in.

I have reinstalled the very latest version of the desktop application (1.2.64.408) which I downloaded directly from your website today. The reason that I'm doing any of this is because the app was incorrectly telling me that I was offline.

I connected to my employer's VPN, which I only use occasionally to access internal servers, and suddenly everything sprang back to life. I also see the QR code option again.

The fact that QR login has now reappeared makes me wonder whether Spotify was failing to load the intended login screen earlier, and responding by dredging up an entirely different login system. Something from the past which it shouldn't have been displaying at all. The UI was outdated, so maybe the login request was too?

I have no idea why only Spotify would be affected by this. General internet connectivity works just fine with or without the VPN active.

The VPN's endpoint is in the same city as my computer.

Here's how I solved the problem :

1 - disconnect your vpn

2 - log out and exit spotify windows app

3 - restart your computer

4 - launch spotify and try to connect

5 - this time, the QR code login will be avaible, use it

6 - use your mobile app to complete the login

7 - restart your vpn

On my side, the login feature was broken due to the vpn, pretty sure...

I hope it will be fixed soon because I have to use my VPN constantly

I did something similar, but I disconnected the WI-FI instead of a VPN.

The issue has now gone away for me, possibly with the Spotify update I installed earlier today.

Edit: It's back today.

What worked for me:

Set my VPN to USA. (My account was made in the US, but I am not there now.)

In Preferences (under the login prompt) I changed to No Proxy.

This finally let me log in with my FB.

The issue seems to be caused by Windows 11 incorrectly believing that the computer is offline, when it isn't.

In the Settings window, one of the status messages at the top describes your network state. For me, this was saying "Not Connected" even while I was happily browsing the web. I was able to correct this by clicking the status message, then clicking the "Get Help" button at the top of the page that opened, and finally using the second troubleshooting button in the Get Help window that opened. This button is the one which resets all network adapters.

The Settings app then realised that I was online and Spotify started working normally, even without a VPN connection.

The issue is in fact Windows 11. After solving it initially, it kept coming back after a reboot. Turns out it also affects the Minecraft launcher.

I was able to permanently solve this by going to Settings > Windows Update > Advanced > Optional Updates and installing the latest cumulative updates.

I hope this helps.
