Make entire play queue editable

There's currently two queues in Spotify:

  • The editable queue. ("Queued tracks")
  • The locked queue. ("Next tracks")

If you press the Skjermbilde-2015-04-10-20.52.53.png queue button with tracks in both lists, you can see that these two queues follow each other. The editable queue always plays first.

The problem is having a locked queue at all.

You can't empty it without interrupting playback, and you'll have to use a workaround to do so. You can't reorder it or add or delete songs. After finishing the editable queue, Spotify always continues playback from the locked queue.

The workaround is starting playback at the very last item on a page. The locked queue will then have no further items. Then you can continue by purely using the queue right-click function instead of double-click or enter. This adds items to the editable queue. These tracks can then be reordered and deleted as you wish.

This UI behaviour is, however, not very user-friendly and quite frankly really annoying. It's also very unconventional having two queues in a music player. I've never seen any other software using either a dual-queue system or a locked queue system.

Here's a good implementation suggestion from user Styrke:

----

Google Play Music's queue system is really easy to understand and use. Just do what they do.

I can describe it by three (3) easy bullets:

  • Double clicking a song starts playing it and adds the rest of the list that the song came from to the queue. (The queue gets overwritten)
  • Right click one or more songs to add them to the top ("play next") or the bottom ("add to queue") of the queue.
  • Everything in the queue can be removed or rearranged by drag-and-drop

----

EDIT: I updated the terminology to match the new Spotify. Items are no longer yellow and white, but are now under separate headings and in the same color instead.

Hey everyone, now you can edit your Play Queue on your Desktop, Android and iOS device. You can add songs to 'Up Next', remove songs and clear the queue. Thanks for continuing to bring us great ideas!

I've never seen (and can't find now) that "Choose as current playlist"
option. Right click from a playlist from the left nav bar? Not there. Do
you happen to know where that would have been in the iOS app? I hope I'm
not missing something here, or asking a stupid question.

I just mean that if I'm playing a playlist, all I want to be able to do is
click on the queue, and instead of swiping left to saving it to "Your
Music", I think we should be able to delete a song from the queue. Or like
the original post said, even better would be to be able to edit (i.e.
rearrange the playlist).

Do you ever use the Desktop app to edit playlists?

Do you use Shuffle?

If you Right click on the playlist in the left panel of the Desktop app, then does the "Choose as current playlist" change the "locked queue (white items)" to be a new random Shuffle?

Or do you always use the iOS app?

I was playing around with Google Play's music service on Android and noticed I could re-order the queue.  I never remembered seeing that in Spotify's Android app so I checked and saw it wasn't possible, which is probably why I never noticed it. Add me to the growing list of people who want to be able to reorder the queue. Please.

The queue system in the desktop app is a mess. I don't understand the way it works and nothing explains it. managing what goes in the queue is a pain and the current design avoids that problem, but not being able to remove or reorder the queue is infuriating. Why won't you let me delete songs from the queue without making it excruciating?

Please, please bring back the option to view your queue! It is the only way to curate your listening. It's important to me at work, but it's important too at parties and gatherings when you want to roll with the mood.

This is the reason I just canceled my Premium subscription after three days.

I really wanted this to work out, Spotify. I wanted to give you $10 a month. But I just can't justify spending even that much on a piece of software that's poorly designed and obviously isn't being improved--especially when Google Play Music has the same fee, a larger catalog and the features I need in a music player.

As someone who has worked as a programmer in the past, you are flagrantly violating the principle of least astonishment. Spotify's queue behaves in a completely nonintuitive way. No one would ever expect the entire album (or, God forbid, the entire list of search results) to be queued when they queue a single song. This in itself is a massive flaw in any software product; you should be trying to confuse the user as little as possible, not deliberately introducing confusing behavior. Not allowing people to remove songs from their own play queue is even less intuitive. It might be understandable if the service were intended to function as a radio, like the free version of Pandora--but no, you want to force someone searching for "Don't Fear the Reaper" to listen to every single song on Spotify with the words "don't," "fear" or "reaper" in the title, for no apparent reason. I can't begin to wrap my head around why you thought this would be a good idea.

Even the above might be forgivable if it were a problem that appeared in early versions of Spotify and was fixed immediately, but that's not the case. When your users--your paying users, not even just the freeloaders--tell you that this behavior is nonintuitive and unwanted, you tell them it can't be fixed "right now." You make nonsensical comments like "we want to have a perfect product before we start adding extra features" when the feature that is being requested is standard even in many free media players. You actively remove workarounds that people were using to emulate this feature. I can only imagine that there must be some monetary reason for this, because you seem to be willfully ignoring the fact that nobody likes this behavior. However, it isn't cost-effective for you to chase potential customers away by deliberately providing a badly-designed program and expecting people to pay for it either.

Obviously, someone is willing to pay for this pile of dreck, because you're still in business. But that person is not me. When your business strategy is causing you to lose customers after only three days because there's a better service out there for the same price, it's time to rethink it.

Wow, this has been an issue since at least 2012 and Spotify hasn't gotten off their asses and given us a decent queue editor.  I just want to take all my saved tracks, shuffle them, and then rearange or delete a track in the queue.  I loved Spotify until realized this is a major downfall.  SPOTIFY, how long until you give us a way to edit our queue...?  I agree with others that my money might be better spent one another streaming service that might adress an issue that is at least 3 years old and has over seven pages of comments!!

@rocket_fish

How about the following?

      >> ...  take all my saved tracks, shuffle them, and then rearange or delete a track in the queue.

* Ctrl-A on your Displayed queue that you want to rearrange and edit.

* Right click, then

* Queue.

Your Displayed queue is copied in Yellow-- which yellow copy of your queue you can rearrange and edit.

@rednblu, this is the whole point of this thread, why is it necessary to pull a 'work-around' like that to make the queue editable?? This shouldn't be necessary, the queue should be editable at all times regardless!

saarepet

At the moment I would be  satisfied if Spotify could fix re-arranging of the white songs (queued) on  Windows desktop version. When you drag several songs at a time, maybe half of them will move on new place. The other half is left somewhere on the way. An screen refreshing doesn't work. New order is updated only after I wisit History and then come back to queue...

This bug has been there for SEVERAL MONTHS now!
Please fix this already! I'm re-arranging the queue almost daily and it's driving me nuts...

Andf after that the make it so that the queue is editable at the all times.
