[iOS] Airplay 2 Support for iOS

New idea for earlier closed ideas:

Experiencing delay with Spotify when streaming to multiple Airplay 2 devices. Works with Apple Music

Updated on 2021-08-07

Hello everyone,

We apologize for any confusion we have caused. To clarify, Spotify will support Airplay 2. Please continue to use this thread to add your votes and comments.

We’ll post updates when they become available.

AirPlay 2 has two modes, buffered and real-time. Real time is where the stream goes from the phone to the speaker directly. Buffered is where the URL of the stream is handed off to the speaker and then the speaker pulls the stream directly. All apps support real-time playback. It is buffered that Spotify doesn’t support and will never support until they make code changes to support the new APIs that were introduced with AirPlay 2. But real-time and buffered are both capable of multi rooms. It’s just a lot more efficient if the phone isn’t doing all the work. I don’t own any HomePods but I believe the other limitation is you can’t use Siri to tell the speaker what to play. Playback always has to originate from the phone.

We bought 3 HomePods recently; great audio from those little things for the price so I’ll probably get even more over time. However was banging my head off the wall trying to understand why the audio cuts out while using Spotify. So frustrating. Then I read this:

And I just found this, which brought me to this forum:

As a HomePod owner I feel I did not have a choice so I cancelled Spotify last month, and went for Apple Music.

Spotify, your strategy of ignoring your customers may not have a noticeable short term impact but erasing good will and trust takes years to regrow. For example, how likely am I to recommend Spotify to my friends now?

Update: You can transfer Spotify playlists to Apple Music using services such as soundiiz.com

This thread was started in January of 2019.

it’s about to be January of 2022.

spotify is the most incompetent tech company of them all.

I can recommend „Playlisty“. It does the job very well and only costs a minimal one time purchase. Available on the AppStore.

5 years. Disgraceful. Spotify should get cancelled. What a piece of ...

Any update on this indefinite delay? A lot of people are patiently waiting.

OK, it has begun.  I have downloaded Apple Music, not bad, hi res!  Interface will need some learning.  I have purchased software to transfer my playlists...it works REALLY WELL.  My free trial ends in a month or so., and at that point I will make a decision, Spotify or Apple Music. Won't pay for both, plus some of the AppleOne bundles are appealing.  I have some cool new devices that Spotify has BRICKED given its lack of AirPlay2 support.  Without this support, I will choose Apple Music.  No Bainer.  End of story.

Come on Spotify, where is the customer focus? ... I'm pulling for you, but anti-consumer behavior must not be tolerated.

I did that 3 months ago and have been super happy with Apple Music, I would
only reevaluate if Airplay 2 and lossless / hi-fi became available on
Spotify. End of story. Spotify, get**bleep** together!

Just one of those wild ideas (AirPlay 2 support) that Spotify will just keep us losing our minds how long can they make not supporting something.
