[iOS] Implement Native HomePod Support

Details

Just this week at WWDC (June 22, 2020), Apple announced support for third party music services on the HomePod.  I'm requesting that Spotify implement native support for the HomePod such that one or even multiple HomePods will appear in the "Connect to a device" menu on any Apple device WITHOUT having to connect through Airplay.  This will also allow users to ask Siri to play songs from Spotify on their HomePod(s).

Apple is opening up the HomePod, and I know there are many other HomePod users that would love to have native Spotify support on their speaker.

So @DavidWesterh, thank you so much because your comment actually reminded me of the most absurdly ironic chapter of this whole saga…

The fact that Spotify freaking SUED APPLE in what was at the time considered a potential landmark antitrust case.  As you can clearly see in the article I linked the complaint was specifically directed at Apple's practice of limiting access to the HomePod’s native integration API’s and thus preventing 3rd-party streaming services from running them!

The fact that it’s now been literally over 3yrs since that lawsuit was filed ostensibly w/ the goal of forcing Apple to do exactly what they ultimately willingly did about a yr later, and yet Spotify STILL hasn’t made this happen is straight-up pathetic!  Furthermore, it makes me think that all those ppl who said at the time Spotify didn’t actually care and was primarily doing all of it as a publicity stunt were spot-on.  Case in point being the fact that we still don’t have it.
If Spotify had truly been prepared to implement this  but didn’t due to Apple’s “discrimination” as they indicated, then they should’ve already had this functionality built, ready to roll, and submitted in the form of an app update to Apple right?!

I mean fundamentally what kind of company sits here and sues for the right to do something that they don’t even have the capability of doing even if they were freaking allowed to?!  That’s just asinine, somebody needs to get fired!

Ok ok so this will be my last post in this series of rants I promise lol!  While I already shared the Inverse article describing Spotifys frivolous lawsuit in my last comment, after watching the embedded video at the top of the article that was directly produced and distributed by Spotify, I just had to give this video its very own dedicated comment, it is truly THAT epic!!

This one’s for all you other frustrated (sexually and otherwise) commenters on this thread!
Do yourselves a favor and WATCH THIS VIDEO! (EDIT: The direct link doesn’t work outside the article embed sadly, but you can still view it within the article itself Here While I can’t give us what we all really want, I can guarantee this video will at least briefly bring a smile to your face as you bask in the ironic woke-ness and self-righteous indignation of Spotifys South Park-knockoff animated characters pulling a classic Trump and describing how “unfairly” they’ve been treated at the hands of 🍎

Just don’t expect to then ask Siri to play some Spotify tunes to match your new found “joyful mood” on the HomePod 😂😆

@mheerod your video link redirects me to a Google page which says: 404. That’s an error.

The requested URL / was not found on this server. That’s all we know

MrQuez

@Petrutaraul Yeah I realized that right after posting…

I updated the comment to reflect the fact the links broken. It seems the articles so old the video isn’t even hosted outside the article itself anymore 😝

I’m searching YouTube and elsewhere now for an alternative link, if I didn’t know any better though I’d think Spotify intentionally tried to get rid of this thing because it isn’t on their YouTube profile, not any other obvious places lol

Please add native support for HomePods. Apple opened things up 2 years ago and still nothing from Spotify even though others are available. The reality is that the longer this goes on the more at some point I will break down and switch to Apple Music, which if I really wanted to do I would have done already. Pretty please? With sugar on top?

Spotify accusing Apple that it's their fault that users can't use Spotify as default on Homepod and Apple saying that they already opened the API is something like that:

Honnestly, still nothing new : A soon as my girlfriend gets an iPhone, we will switch to Apple Music, because Spotify is clearly making war against Apple since several years.

We got HomePod in several rooms at home, and it's really conveniance and amzing, but I won't ruin the experience just because of Spotify, knowing that Apple can provides a better musical streaming service !

Spotify can do the same thing as YouTube does with their Youtube premium. If you pay for YouTube using the Apple Store, the price is higher, so that 30% they need to give to Apple is covered. Spotify can just increase the price for people who pays using Apple payment system and that's it. If you want to pay the default price, you can pay using the web browser and that's it.

I dont understand, why this is still not available in Germany

It’s quite incredulous. This feature should have been ready to go when Apple updated the SDK. It’s crazy that it’s not been done before now and even more disappointing that Spotify are ignoring their customers (no update on this for nearly a year) and putting prices up 🤷‍♂️

bye bye Spotify. Loyal customer for many years…..off to a service that values basic features asked for by thousands of customers.
