Users on Android devices can't play content in Offline mode

We've received reports from Android users mentioning issues with Offline mode. When the device is set in Airplane mode or internet access is disabled, the app gets stuck on a black screen until a “You’re currently offline” error is displayed.

Our tech folks are currently looking into this. If you're experiencing this issue, make sure to add your vote and share the following details:

  • your device's make, model and OS version
  • the version of Spotify you're running
  • whether you're seeing
    -- a black screen;
    -- or an error message saying you're offline
  • timestamp of when you last experienced the issue including your time zone

A short screen recording which captures the exact behavior in action would also be greatly appreciated.

 

We'll keep everyone posted here as soon as we have any updates on the matter, so subscribe to the thread from the three dots menu at the top to stay tuned.

Black screen at offline startup on two different android mobiles for several months already. I again and again contacted the support and went through the whole long deleting and reinstalling routine without any solution. I have no idea why the technicians can't manage the task although it happened after an update months ago. My yearly subscription ends in november and I don't think I'll extend ist... We are asked to pay on top for audiobooks now but the tecnical works aren't done for so many months...

The app wont start (gets stuck with a black screen) when the phone is in airplane mode and the app is not in offline mode. 

I'm running Android 12 on a Ulefone X11 pro.

@Hexanumeric You're so right!!! I just have to switch off the flight mode during the start up of the app and then it works, although I prevent it from downloading any data and imeadiately turn on the flight mode again after Spotify is running. So great, juhuuu. Such a simple solution and the whole support has no idea about it for months... Thanks!!!

I'd recommend updating the app to the latest version (should be 9.0.76) to see if that does the trick.

Last time I got on a plane I also experienced this issue.

 

Real-life scenario:

Don't use spotify for some days (what I actually mean by this is that it's not running in the background).

Get on a plane.

Put phone in flight mode.

Start spotify to enjoy your (since long) previously downloaded playlist.

Spotify won't work at all. --> ERROR

 

The fix is to detect lack of internet and *automatically* enter offline mode and offer access to previously downloaded playlists.

 

Requiring users to manually go into spotiy and enable offline mode *before* getting on a plane, or entering a hike in the mountains and losing internet is just silly UX. Your "offline mode" should not be a setting, but a completely automatic behaviour depending on the current internet status.

Finally It got this fixed on my Galaxy A55, such a shame for a multibilion-dolar company that took so long to fix an issue.

I have the same issue, for months now. Without internet service, the app only loads a blank, black screen. The widget says "Spotify is offline". Can't listen to downloaded content. If I have the app running while in a service zone, and then lose service, it will continue to play downloaded content fine. But if I start it up somewhere I don't have service, it will not work. This has been the case for months, on two different cell phones (just got a new android, same issue). I have tried all the attempted fixes and it is not fixed. It does not work. I'm not getting what I'm paying for.
