Users on Android devices can't play content in Offline mode

We've received reports from Android users mentioning issues with Offline mode. When the device is set in Airplane mode or internet access is disabled, the app gets stuck on a black screen until a “You’re currently offline” error is displayed.

Hi there,

Our tech folks are currently looking into this. If you're experiencing this issue, make sure to add your vote and share the following details:

  • your device's make, model and OS version
  • the version of Spotify you're running
  • whether you're seeing
    -- a black screen;
-- or an error message saying you're offline
  • timestamp of when you last experienced the issue including your time zone

A short screen recording which captures the exact behavior in action would also be greatly appreciated.

We'll keep everyone posted here as soon as we have any updates on the matter, so subscribe to the thread from the three dots menu at the top to stay tuned.

Cheers 🤘

I'm another user also having this problem. Spotify wont open in airplane mode and when mobile data isn't turned on. The screen is just black. As soon as I turn on Internet, spotify opens. It has been happening for more than a month. The offline mode is off, but the offline library, my playlists are on. Offline access is also on. All my playlists are stored there. I've tried every troubleshooting method posted here. Clearing cache and data, reinstall, clean reinstall. My app is up to date since I just reinstalled again this morning and it's still the same black screen if I'm in airplane mode.

I came on here to lay a complaint and found out that I wasn't the only one experiencing this problem. We paid for a service and the service is not being rendered to us and there's no response from the Spotify team. Is there even a plan to fix this issue (if there is, when exactly is it going to be fixed) or are you going to continue ignoring us? Let us know instead of keeping us hanging.

Here's a video of the issue

I hope this issue is fixed soon.

Thank you for that clear statement. Spotify has to fix it, but instead
they increase their prices.

This happened to me. I was getting ready for takeoff on a 10+ hour flight when it broke so I was pretty frustrated to say the least 😞 about 3 or 4 hours in I thought about adding a widget to my homescreen which actually allowed me to play the song I was last listening to before it had completely crashed. I was able to skip songs occasionally from the widget but the actual app didnt work that entire time.

Spotify, I have screenshots with time stamps if you need.

i think you have to update your android or spotify and the problem will get solved.

JoJoh1
You are kidding😭 If it would be that simple, we wouldn't have the
discussion here.

Hello,

Following up on my message sent Aug. 6th about this issue, the latest Spotify update I have performed seems to have solved the issue on my configuration. New version is v9.0.72.967 (old one with the issue was v.9.0.66.655). As a reminder, my configuration is :

-Samsung Galaxy S22+

-Spotify Premium Duo

-Android 15

Cheers,

The update didn't change a thing vor me. Same Problem, not solved.

Occurred immediately following the update that my Samsung phone nagged me to download and install, that now keeps telling me to do same update over and over again. I hadnt been nagged for weeks and then out-of-the -blue, about one week ago, notified that Update was needed. I did it, thinking it was a new update, but started asking me to update again, and my downloads on Spotify were not loaded anymore, actually required downloading again. Cost me $80 in extra data, SO FAR, and not finished yet. SPOTIFY IS NOW SLOW. SLOW, SLOW.

Wrote in before. Just giving an update. Found that if I am going out of service (we camp a lot). While in service, go to settings, go to Data-saving and offline, Under Offline, turn Offline mode on (Only do this when you know you'll be offline and then turn it back on when you're back online). Also make sure Offline access is on (Always have that on).

I know, it sucks. But it generally works. Now, last weekend my phone died and it didn't work. But the weekend before my phone died and it did. It'**bleep** or miss if you have to restart your phone. So, do those steps and don't restart or let your phone battery die.. SMH!! Such BS to pay for a service that doesn't do what it says or used to do. Been with Spotify for many many years and this sh!t p!sses me off to the point that if I have to put my own music back on my phone, then I don't need Spotify!! It has worked fine for years. I have video and screen shots and in one of these comments, a Spotify Rep was asking for video in particular of this happening. I contacted Spotify and got the run-around about who and how to get it to them. Great job Spotify!

I am also experiencing this problem with Spotify 9.0.74.1121on Android 13.

I use a digital audio player that I only connect to Wi-Fi once or twice a week and I use Spotify downloads for offline listening. It doesn't always happen but very frequently if I go to open spotify without an active internet connection the app will only display a black screen until I connect to internet. This basically makes Spotify unusable for using with a music device which is frequently offline.

I have tried restarting the app, the device and clearing cache. Nothing works except connecting to the internet.

Very frustrating!
