[iOS] Playback pausing randomly in background

My Question or Issue

This problem has been ongoing for a while so I’m not listening to much music anymore because of this.

Basically, whenever I’m trying to listen to the songs in my playlists, Spotify will randomly stop the music, and it will not show in the control centre or on the locked screen. The only way to resume listening it to open the app and press play. However it doesn’t continue where it left off, it will play the song from the beginning, which is really annoying.

I’ve tried clearing cache, restarting the app, reinstalled the app, restarting my phone, etc. But nothing has seemed to fix this. It happens with my phone only, not on any of my other devices. I’m at a loss on what I can do to fix this, any solution would be appreciated.

Hey everyone,

Thank you for reporting this issue to us.

The right folks have been looking into this continuously and regrettably weren't able to reproduce this behavior. Even for the long duration this issue was open, the total number of reports include a variety of devices and app versions, but have not been as substantial in the grand scheme of things.

This points to a sporadic nature of the issue and makes it difficult to find a direct cause. Based on the data gathered so far, the root cause of such experiences can range from network issues, to other apps taking over audio priority and the OS itself stopping the app when it might try to save battery.

So without being able to identify a specific cause, we'll need to set this to NRN. We recommend excluding Spotify from any battery saving toggles as a first troubleshooting step.

Besides that we'll continue to optimize the app to hopefully reduce the instances of this occurring. We'll also continue monitoring this thread for anything that might help us identify a specific cause and correlation between the cases.

Take care!

Hello everyone,

I don’t know what happening with Spotify in my mobile, is the 2nd time (in 2021) that have some error which I can’t play music or podcasts.

This error starts today (September 29th), when I’m listening something (music or podcast) the app stop and close automatically, always around 10-15 seconds that was played.

I tried listening offline and online, with musics and podcasts which was downloaded and not, with a cable fone and Bluetooth. But always happens the same, the App close without reason.

This error only happened when the app is opening-working in background.

App Spotify version: 8.6.62.1035

I'm having the same issue. Can play music no issue with phone on while in the app but about 2-10 sec after locking the phone the app crashes. I say crash because when I go back in to the phone I get the same load as I get when initially starting up spotify after I've closed it myself. Run trough every step and nothing seems to fix this. Been in contact with custumer suport and when I try a spotify testing account the issue whent away for about 2 days and is now back. Again tested the test account and seems to now be gone. We shall see in the comming few days it stays that way. Did not work to use a friends account before, when I tried that it keeped crashing. But with the spotify testing account it seems to temporarly fix the issue. This issue has only been on my phone that I'm using now not on my gfs phone that I was allowed to try to use to recreate the issue. Just my phone. Please fix this soon Thank you!

This problem has been fixed for me with the new update. So I recommend updating it!

I have an iPhone 11 Pro Max with iOS 15.0.1, and Spotify Version 8.6.64.1164.  My phone has 212 GB of storage space available.

The Spotify app crashes in every song and drains a lot of battery.
I reseted network settings; even reseted the whole phone; have tried everything that is possible. I have the discipline of keeping other apps closed. I just keep openned the app I’m using. I have used Spotify accounts of other members of my Family Plan on my phone, and they work fine and the battery consumption is normal. I also have used my account on other operating systems and it works fine. The problems occur on my iPhone and iPad.
Appreciate your effective help, because this is very boring.

Hi!

For a few days now, I’ve had exactly the same issue. Tried all trouble shooting steps listed above, enough storage available, no power saver switched on, reinstalled everything, latest updates but Spotify will stop playback and break down within 30 seconds once the app is in the background or phone is locked. Impossible to listen to music.

I’ve seen that Spotify is also trying to download thousands of sounds that were usually available offline and downloaded previously.

I’m in the US.. this only happens when I’m driving/connected to blue tooth and if it’s going to happen, it’s usually within the first minute of playing a song. It either then figures itself out or I spend the whole carride starting/stopping/starting another song until it finally keeps playing. It hasn’t happened under any other circumstances for me.

I'm going to try a hard uninstall and reinstall and if that doesn't work I'm switching to Apple Music because it's been a full month of paying for a service I can't even use. 😖

Hi,

I am having the exact same problem of the app stopping on it’s own after 2-3 mins of playing a song.
I have deleted and reinstalled the app, logged out and logged back in.
I have updated the app to the latest available version.
I have even switched from iPhone 12 Pro to 13 pro and the problem is still there. I have even updated my iPhone softwares to latest ones.
I do not think there is any other troubleshooting I have left to do.

please help as this is super annoying and stirring me away from this service.

Using the latest version of Spotify for iOS, 8.6.68, with iOS 15.0.1.

Spotify will stop playing a song at the 10s mark. Pressing the pause/play button will not start the song again. This is without a Bluetooth device connected.

Hi there,

I first posted on here 3 weeks ago.

The issue seemed to have resolved when last week's Spotify update came through.

This seems to have worked well with iOS 15.0.1 but then my iPhone 6s plus started to overheat and the battery drainage was shocking.

I've upgraded iOS to version 15.0.2, the app's not working; pausing and shutting down a few seconds into playback, and also struggling to update the playlists I've set to download.

This seems to have happened on 14 October. I know because I had cancelled my Spotify subscription due to these issues, it was due to end on the 15th but then I re-subscribed on the 13th because I thought the app was working properly.

Then the 14th rolled around and now I'm playing music off my external HDD for ambiance instead of the Spotify I pay for 🥺😩.
