Spotify is introducing a new version of the Your Library view to mobile users of the iOS and Android apps. When you open up the Spotify mobile app you will see this new view. 📱
Check out this Spotify news article for more information:
Listeners Can Explore Their Spotify Collections Faster and Easier With a New ‘Your Library’
This thread is your go-to destination for getting an overview of what's new, asking questions, getting help for issues you might have, as well as to share your feedback on this new version of Your Library. Also, do you have any tips for other users on how you are using the new Your Library? We'd love to hear them.
What's new?
Here is a walkthrough of what's new:
One simple list:
Your Library is now one simple list. At the top, tap on the filters to filter the content you want to see and tap on the sort options to change the sort order of the list. To create a new playlist, tap on the + (plus) symbol at the top right corner.
Dynamic filter options:
At the top, tap on the filters to filter the content you want to see. Tap on the X and then chose another filter to see another type of content. Having no filter selected will show all types of content in the list.
Sort options:
At the top, tap on the sort options to change the sort order of the list.
And in the "Playlists" filter view, you'll have this option to see your playlists in your own order like in the desktop app and web player:
📌 Pinned library items:
If you tap and hold on the screen on any item in the Your Library list or swipe right on it, an option will show up allowing you to pin it and it will stay at the top of the Your Library list.
You can pin anything in Your Library such as playlists, playlist folders, artists, albums, and podcasts. The limit is 4 pinned items. You can unpin "New Episodes" to free up a pin and still get to that using the "Podcasts & Shows" filter or by searching for it. Same with "Liked Songs", you can unpin it and still get back to it at the top of the "Playlists" filter when it is sorted by "Custom order" or by searching for it. You can also pin the "Your Episodes" list to the main library view in addition to the "New Episodes" list if you also want to be able to access "Your Episodes" from the main library view without having to filter to "Podcasts & Shows" first.
To pin more playlists when you run out of the 4 item pins, you can make a playlist folder in the desktop app or web player and then move multiple playlists inside it and then pin the folder in the mobile app. Then tap on the folder at the top and there you go, easier access to all the playlists in that folder and that can be your 4th pin. However, you can't pin a specific playlist if it is in a folder, so you will need to pin the folder instead. Tip: In the desktop app or web player you can also move playlist folders inside of another playlist folder. That means you can pin a playlist folder that contains a whole bunch of other playlist folders if you want to get super organized.
To easily find the item you want to pin, the best way is to use the universal search. At the top of Your Library, tap on the search icon and search for the item you want to pin. The universal search searches your entire library for playlists, playlist folders, artists, albums, podcasts and also shows you your recent searches.
Grid view:
Are you a visual person? You're in control. With the new grid view you can view Your Library with bigger artwork if that's your jam. This is great for when you're on the go or in the car so you can find what you're looking for faster. To switch to the grid view, tap on the squares icon to the right. Tap on it again to go back to the list view.
Universal search:
The new universal search can be accessed by tapping the search icon at the top right corner. The new search allows you to quickly search through your entire library for playlists, playlist folders, artists, albums, and podcasts without having to go to a specific content section.
Recent searches:
The new universal search also shows you your most recent Your Library searches so you can quickly get back to what you previously searched for.
Faster settings navigation:
Tap on your profile picture in the top left corner to get to settings faster.
Downloads: (Requires Premium)
When you are in offline mode you'll see your downloaded content faster upon app launch in the home tab.
In Your Library, tap on the "Downloaded" filter either in the main list view or after tapping on a filter to view your downloaded content.
How the new version of Your Library (iOS & Android) evolved over time during testing:
When the new version of Your Library on mobile was being tested with users, a few of the main points of feedback were the following:
These two options were added during the testing phase. Other points of feedback were also made by users during the test, but Spotify is always looking to improve the app so hopefully the new library experience will improve over time.
I personally like being able to see my playlists in the same custom sort order I have them arranged in the desktop app, so I was glad to see that issue was addressed. A bonus feature was also added which is the ability to pin a few of your favorite items to the top of Your Library. I really like being able to have my favorites one tap away at the top of my library. A few other new features that I like are being able to quickly search through my entire library, being able to see my library in a new grid view, and being able to get to settings right from the library view.
Feedback:
Now that the new version of Your Library on mobile is rolling out to all users, what do you think? You can leave your feedback as a reply in this thread. If your feedback is suggesting certain changes, it is best to also post each individual idea in the Community Idea Exchange where users can vote and comment on your ideas and it'll be easier to track each idea. Hey @youngcoconut
How do I sort my playlists by custom order?
To sort your playlists by custom order, first tap on the "playlists" filter and then tap on the sort options and change it to "custom order". Then you'll be able to see your playlists in your own custom order like in the desktop app and web player.
Playlists in folders are not sorted as per the main page. This is doing my head in! Spotify fix this please. Can't be that hard to fix.
Hey HamsterHam,
The suggestion from MattSuda worked for me. I actually had to restart Spotify on my phone and desktop though, in order for them to sync and in order to be as is on the Spotify desktop app. Hope this helps.
@youngcoconut
No it doesn't as I want them sorted alphabetically like I can do on the main Your Library tab on the app.
I can't filter by artist in my library, android.
I already reinstalled. Attached is what's happening
Hey @Jim714
Do you have a "creator" filter. Try using that filter. It is named differently from "artist" but it should work the same.
I agree wholeheartedly with the points mentioned above. I have OCD and it's very frustrating for me to not be able to access my playlists immediately whenever I tap "Your Library". I mainly listen to music straight from the playlists in my library and it's very frustrating to have to first select the playlist button on the top every time I tap my library (which is very often). I usually tap "Your Library" and immediately scroll down to find my usual playlists. Now I have to tap multiple times because sometimes I also tap the other buttons next to "playlists" by mistake and it just makes me so angry. I really REALLY don't like the new view of the library and have been struggling to manage my anger caused by it for quite a while.
After some more weeks with hundreds of complains it is obvious: Spotify gives a sh... on the preferences of customers.
Their employees and developers want to do their thing. They want to introduce systems (AI) which think for the people. Customers do only disturb.
Everyone has to make up the mind on this understanding.
Hi folks,
Thank you for sharing your post on this thread.
We completely understand where you're coming from and from our side we always strive to give the best in our service. We're constantly trying new features and all this feedback is always taken into account for new changes to the app.
@Jim714 In this case, we suggest you open a new thread so we can start treating this separately. Please try to share as much info as possible on the post to better understand the issue.
We'll be on the lookout.
Ah sorry @Jim714
I originally misunderstood your post. I was referring to the "creator" sort order in the list of sort options that would show up once you tap on the "alphabetical" text next to the arrows icon.
I now see that the "artist" filter is gone in your filter options in your screenshot.
For the "artist" filter to show up at the top, you need to be following artists. If you have saved a song or album from an artist, they won't automatically show up in the artists section of Your Library. This was changed in 2019 after lots of feedback from users who said that they don't necessarily want an artist in their artists section of Your Library just because they saved a song or album from them. So for them to show up you will need to follow the artist.
However I see that you mentioned that you are already following the artists. That's not supposed to happen and seems like a new issue to me.
Apologies if not correct place to ask but today I’ve lost all artist pictures and album covers in my library, they just appear blank although playlists still have artwork. IOS on three devices (iPhone/iPad/Touch)
Not aware of changing anything my end but assume it’s specific to me as can’t see widespread complaints?
I’ve deleted cache, logged out, reinstalled app etc to no avail. Any advice?
Thanks
EDIT: Now widespread reporting of this error, not just me. Will await presumable fix.
UPDATE: Clean reinstall after today’s update to 8.6.55.123 has fixed this. THANK-YOU.
Why when I download a playlist every single song suddenly becomes a favorite? What is the logic? This is super frustrating because let's say I download the Broken Greek (fantastic BTW book and playlist of 39 hours) every single song is now my favorite. How does that make any sense and to make matters worse if I unfavorite the playlist the whole download goes away. Super stupid.
Hey @rhemamills
This is being looked into here:
There are other comments from users that might help
So months on and no change at all to the fact that playlists only ever appear in a 'recently played' order within folders, and the folders themselves appear in a 'recently accessed' order as well. It remains without a doubt the most stupid creative decision this app has ever gone through, and is making it unusable. I want to find my music as I've arranged it, efficient to my needs and preferences. This used to be a given. There is surely not a single benefit to this new, inferior setup. Who the **bleep** wants all their folders and playlists moving around in some random, messy order all the time?
It's doing my head in, to the point I'm in the process of setting up playlists on other apps now so I can leave Spotify in the near future. I'm not giving money to an amateur service that can't even keep my music in a basic order of any kind - let alone let me have the 'luxury' of actually sorting it for myself. A relatively decent service now utterly spoiled by the most dumb creative choices that I can't even workaround because the whole platform is now so incredibly cheap and amateur.
I have been living with this new library view for quite some time, and I have to say I hate it just as much as the day it was introduced.
I just don’t understand why Spotify wouldn’t introduce a simple thing such as always going into “playlists” when first opening the app, instead I have to rummage around in the “mixed view” thing for a couple of seconds because sometimes it’s still in playlist view and sometimes it’s reverted.
I don’t like it one bit. Please, just please let us have some control over this. I’ve been a loyal Spotify user for 10+ years and it just amazes me how you just implement changes to the dislike of the users and just wait until they are so used to it they won’t complain. “They’ll like it, just give it a couple months”
that’s not your userbase taking a liking to a bad feature it’s just them getting accustomed to a worse one.
Can you make it remember my selection (playlists)? So i don’t have to select it every time I open the app
