Desktop Spotify STOPPED WORKING on Windows 7 ???

Desktop Spotify STOPPED WORKING on Windows 7 ???

Desktop Windows

Operating System

Windows 7

So, a couple days ago my Spotify stopped playing tracks. I'll press play and the whole software will basically freeze. When I open the Task Manager, I see four or five instances of Spotify.exe running.

I'll close the Desktop app and try opening again, but it gives me a warning: "The Spotify application is not responding". I have to close each of the five Spotify.exe running on my Task Manager before I can open it again.

In the past three days I've tried restarting the computer multiple times and uninstalling/reinstalling the Spotify Desktop app multiple times. I've looked through these message boards for possible solutions, but none of them worked (including the notepad/hosts thing, unplugging my sound card, changing sound device settings, etc).

In one of the threads, I saw a board member mention that he was having the same problem and only got it working again when he upgraded to Windows 8. But I shouldn't have to upgrade just because of a bug on the Spotify software, right?

If any of the actual Spotify people read these boards, could you clarify whether you guys are working to fix this? And if this is a users-only board, how do I reach the company to demand a solution?

I have a Spotify subscription and I'd like to know if I'm wasting my money on a non-working product.

Thanks in advance.

I can make a couple suggestions, but it's really shooting in the dark.

I am also using a desktop on Win 7. Have not had any problems recently.

But on Jan. 15, all support from Microsoft for Win 7 ends. You probably already know that. The computer will continue to work. But a lot of software vendors will no longer guarantee that their applications will work on Windows 7. It will no longer be a supported operating system.

Maybe you need some sort of software update for your sound card. Check the website of the manufacturer of the sound card.

It is possible (though unlikely) that your antivirus program is causing Spotify to freeze. Even if you have not made any changes, your AV app is constantly updating itself, and it might have a bad update that is causing trouble. Maybe the antivirus app is somehow blocking the port that the Spotify app uses to connect to the internet.

Have you had all the latest updates from Windows? You could try to roll back to the previous build, but that's kind of a last resort, 'cause that could have other unintended consequences.

I'm not a Spotify employee. Sometimes the moderators in this community respond to posts, and they are Spotify employees.

You can use the contact form here:

Near the bottom there is a link to an area where you can get to a live chat.

It may not be fair or reasonable, but lots of software makers are just going to completely bail out on Win 7 after Jan. 14. If their app is not working and you're using an unsupported OS, you'll be out of luck. And that's probably what you're going to hear from Spotify support.

You might have to use the web player.

Just in case you were not fully aware that Windows 7 will no longer be supported after Jan. 14:

Good luck.

Same problem. Using Windows 7, music does not play.

Hey folks,

Thanks for reaching out to us about this.

Thanks!

I’ve had this problem for years now with Windows 10. Spotify does remove the Windowed part of the app on closing, but all of the additional Spotify processes remain in the task list and are no longer joined. I do not have "start Spotify with Windows" enabled. I do not have "close to the tray" enabled.  This happens with the App from the Microsoft Store or the downloaded program.

I’ve had to resort to using a command-line action to quickly remove all Spotify processes as follows:

C:\Windows\System32\cmd.exe /c C:\Windows\System32\taskkill.exe /F /T /IM “Spotify.exe”

This will temporarily open a command window which closes when completed. The action occurs in the command window and closes all processes started by Spotify.exe.

While this is not a proper solution, it is a procedure to close all remaining processes started by Spotify and will allow Spotify to be restarted later.
