Task bar icon low resolution

Task bar icon low resolution

Windows 11 has a new feature where the taskbar icons can get smaller when the taskbar is full.

To enable this, go to "Windows Settings > Personalization > Taskbar behaviors", and set "Show smaller taskbar buttons" to "When taskbar is full".

To experience this bug, you may also need to enable "Show my taskbar on all displays" and set "When using multiple displays, show my taskbar apps on" to "Main taskbar and taskbar where window is open"

When you have two monitors, and one monitor shows the small icon of Spotify, and the other a large icon, the small icon will be put in place of the large icon, making for a blurry, low-resolution icon.

Hi there @Cybr,

Thanks for reaching out. We'll be glad to help you get to the bottom of this behaviour.

This is indeed quite peculiar and so far we haven't been able to reproduce it. Rest assured though, we'll be happy to delve deeper into this. To that end, could you please provide us the following:

  • To cover our bases, consider trying a clean reinstall and see if that resolves it. Try installing both the version from our site and the one from the Microsoft store, as behaviour can differ between them.
  • When did this start happening? Did it work before?
  • Does this only happen with a two monitor setup?
  • Does changing the resolution or scaling settings affect the behaviour?
  • Does changing which monitor is set as primary affect the behaviour?
  • The exact Spotify Versions you use.

With this information, we’d be happy to investigate.

Keep us posted.

Some additional details:

1. At "Windows Settings > Personalization > Taskbar behaviors," "Combine taskbar buttons and hide labels" must be set to "Never."
2. The primary display's taskbar must be full enough to start showing smaller icons (open a couple of browser/explorer instances). The secondary display's taskbar will then have a blurry Spotify icon.
3. I'm using Spotify for Windows (64 bit) 1.2.72.438.g8c88c31c.

It started with the new Windows 11 feature "Show smaller taskbar buttons."

And yes, only two-monitor setups are affected.
Scaling/resolution changes do not affect the situation.

After some more testing, it appears to be an upstream issue in Windows. All other apps are also affected, but Spotify, probably due to having thick, slanted, contrasting curves in its logo, showed exaggerated aliasing, making the issue apparent.

Hi @Cybr,

Thanks for the info.

Good to narrow it down. We'll keep looking into this, if we discover anything on the matter, we'll let you know. Keep us posted if you find out any other info about this on your end.

Cheers!
