Switch from Basic Family to Basic Duo

My Question or Issue

I wanted to change from my Basic Family to Basic Duo.  However there is no option to do that. Do I need to fully cancel my subscription and resubscribe to Premium Duo before I can downgrade to Basic Duo?

We do not want audiobooks and Premium Duo actually cost more than our current Basic Family subscription.

Hello! Welcome to the Spotify Community.

Currently, you need to cancel your current plan before you can sign up for a new one. Spotify is working on changing this process, but you can follow these steps for now:

1. Go to your account page.
2. Under Manage your plan, click Change plan.
3. Scroll to your plan and click Cancel Premium.
4. Follow the steps until you see a confirmation message.
5. Now that your account is back to free, sign up for the Premium plan of your choice at www.spotify.com/premium.

We're afraid it's not currently possible to switch between Basic plans so switching from a Basic Family plan to a Basic Duo one won't work. You did mention the price difference between the normal Duo plan and your Basic Family one, so it'd be understandable if you don't want to cancel your current plan and switch to the normal one, and to avoid any confusion we just wanted to let you know that if you cancel a Basic plan, you won’t be able to subscribe to it again.

Just to be 100% clear on this:

I used to have Premium Family. Two months ago, I switched to Basic Family.

Is it possible for me to go Basic Duo by first downgrading to Premium Duo, and then to Basic Duo?

Thanks for the question! 

The Basic plans are only available to folks who've been on Premium before the cut-off date as it has been in your case with Premium Family. If you switch your subscription to Premium Duo, the change will be taking effect after the cut-off date, which means that the Duo Basic option won't be available to you 🙂

This is the real solution to this question - if you try to switch from family basic on spotify to duo basic it is not possible and you will lose your basic account and get stuck with only premium options. It's a bad user experience and seems to be made purposefully unclear in the documentation so that users end up paying more for less.

Hi Dessi, I'm in the same situation and would appreciate your help.  I was on Premium Family and wanted to switch to Basic Duo, but as downgrading to Premium Family was the only option for me, I did that.  But as there are only 2 of us, I really want to switch to Basic Duo.  If I now switch to Premium Duo (rather than cancelling my subscription), will it let me then downgrade to Basic Duo, or will it consider my Premium Duo subscription new and render me ineligible for Spotify Basic?  Thanks!

@tollhouse - While you'll be able to switch from Basic Family to Premium Duo, we're afraid that you won't be eligible for Basic Duo in this case. It's also worth noting that if you cancel Basic, it’s not possible to resubscribe to this plan in the future.
