My Question or Issue

This problem has been ongoing for a while so I’m not listening to much music anymore because of this.

Basically, whenever I’m trying to listen to the songs in my playlists, Spotify will randomly stop the music, and it will not show in the control centre or on the locked screen. The only way to resume listening it to open the app and press play. However it doesn’t continue where it left off, it will play the song from the beginning, which is really annoying.

I’ve tried clearing cache, restarting the app, reinstalled the app, restarting my phone, etc. But nothing has seemed to fix this. It happens with my phone only, not on any of my other devices. I’m at a loss on what I can do to fix this, any solution would be appreciated.

Hey everyone,

Thank you for reporting this issue to us.

The right folks have been looking into this continuously and regrettably weren't able to reproduce this behavior. Even for the long duration this issue was open, the total number of reports include a variety of devices and app versions, but have not been as substantial in the grand scheme of things.

This points to a sporadic nature of the issue and makes it difficult to find a direct cause. Based on the data gathered so far, the root cause of such experiences can range from network issues, to other apps taking over audio priority and the OS itself stopping the app when it might try to save battery.

So without being able to identify a specific cause, we'll need to set this to NRN. We recommend excluding Spotify from any battery saving toggles as a first troubleshooting step.

Besides that we'll continue to optimize the app to hopefully reduce the instances of this occurring. We'll also continue monitoring this thread for anything that might help us identify a specific cause and correlation between the cases.

Take care!

Both my sister and I have the same issue, but we are using Samsumg Galaxy phones of different generations. Every time we open Spotify, a popup error comes up to say that we need to apply settings to allow Spotify to play in the background, and gives a button to go to Settings, but the button to allow is already checked! I try to un-check it and re-check it, but it doesn't do anything. So annoying!

This problem has been happening for two months now, the app suddenly closes and it restarts the song from the beginning. I did all the steps to reinstall and did it for about a week now. It keeps happening and at this point I might just not use the app anymore. I tried on other phones and the problem is still the same. I have the latest update and an iPhone Xr. I think the newest update has something to do with this issue.

My music continuously cuts out. I’m trying to work and I keep having to stop to re-start my music which is the same song over and over again. It’s extremely frustrating. I’m not going to listen to Spotify anymore, as it happens every 5 minutes.

I am experiencing the same issue. I also have tried the same things to resolve the issue but it still continues to stop playing during the song. If I close the app and open it again it will resume playing however once it goes to the next song it will stop again.

Hey everyone,

Thanks for reaching out in the Community about this!

We've merged a few threads together to keep you all in the loop and will pass on all the information gathered here to the right folks so this can be investigated.

We can see you've tried a few things already, but just to double-check you haven't missed out a step that might fix the issue, could you make sure that you have:

  • the latest app version installed
  • Spotify enabled for background activity
  • battery saver and optimizer turned off
  • all permissions for Spotify enabled in your phone's apps settings
  • tried reinstalling the app and cleared cache as described here

If all of the above checks out but the issue still persists, it'd be great if you could share with us the following information, if you haven't already:

  • Your device + OS
  • The exact Spotify version
  • Are you able to reproduce this with another device or account?
  • The troubleshooting steps you've tried (eg. changing WiFi/3G/4G networks, restarting your device, setting the app Offline, disabled any battery saving or cache clearing app restrictions for Spotify etc)
  • Any screenshots or screen recording of what's happening would be very helpful - just make sure that there's no private/sensitive info displayed.

We'll be keeping you updated here on any info we have to pass on so we'd suggest ensuring you've subscribed to this thread to stay up to speed. Also, don't forget to add your +VOTE.

Thanks!

I am using android version 11 and it has been for a few months the music will suddenly stop when I connect it to a Bluetooth device be it my car or my ear buds. It happened like every 5 mins and each time I have to unlock my phone and open the Spotify app and press the play button. It did continue playing but after 5 mins the same issue happens again . Pls do something about it as its getting very frustrating .

Just adding as this is happening to me also and seems I'm not the only one. There are may detailed explanations and experiencing the same. Whats dis-heartening is I keep seeing responses from IT team sending people in circles. This is obviously a new thing related to something within the app itself and not our individual phones/accounts. I've never changed my settings from day 1, and never had this issue, so needing to change any settings seems pointless option, even though I've done all stated by the IT teams to do. I can't read through 6 pages today of comments to see if there is a REAL fix.

PS - hint to all and seems to be only thing to work, close app, open app, hit play and lock phone. Once you look at your phone for a message etc, you will need to repeat. Still a pain but guess not a choice. I hope it gets fixed soon as I will not pay for something not working properly and I really like using this app.

I have had this issue for a while now too.
occurs often when I choose music and rarely when I play Spotify playlists (such as top 50s).

iphone 14.6

occurs with and without headphones and Bluetooth WiFi and 4g. Tried clean reinstall and all other suggested previously.

music just stops playing, app shows you’ve not started the song you were listening to and pressing play begins the song again.

I am having the same problem and have done similar trouble shooting steps. Spotify will stop playing for no reason and doesn't show on the lock screen either. Along with this when I'm in the app. The song that displays isn't actually the song thats playing. It is displaying the same song regardless of what I am actually playing in the moment. The skip and pause buttons still work on the song that's really playing but I'm having the same problems as OP as well as the display in the app itself being frozen. I have the latest version installed and have tried the same troubleshooting steps as OP.

Hi @monicax2
I was having the exact same issue with my Spotify, like that I was using the Spotify version 8.5.96. iOS 14.7.1 with a premium subscription.
Now I’m not sure if I just got lucky or if this actually helps at all but I uninstalled the app and logged out, then logged back in and haven’t had issues since 🙂

hope that helps 🙂
